Waves Collect Win Over PCH Cup Rival LMU

MALIBU, California Meaali'i Amosa had a career night with 14 points and 11 rebounds as the Pepperdine women's basketball team defeated PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount, 61-55, earning the team's first West Coast Conference win of the season. 

The Waves (5-8, 1-3) and Lions (5-11, 0-6) were neck and neck through most of the game, but Pepperdine finished with a six-point scoring run for the victory.

BIG WAVES 
 
  • Freshman Meaali'i Amosa (Garden Grove, Calif./Mater Dei HS) led the Waves with 14 points by shooting 7-for-9, brought down 11 rebounds and had a career-high three blocked shots. 
  • Senior Cheyenne Givens (Gardena, Calif./Serra HS/Los Angeles Trade-Tech) had 11 points, two assists and three steals. 
  • Freshman Helena Friend (Huntington Beach, Calif./Blair Academy) tied her career-high with eight points and collected one assist and two steals. 
  • Redshirt junior Becky Obinma (Menifee, Calif./Rosary Academy/Texas Christain) banked eight points, brought down three rebounds and had a career-high three steals.  

GAME RECAP 

After back and forth shots from both sides, Pepperdine went on a 10-point scoring run to take the lead 16-4. Loyola Marymount countered the Waves with a 12-point run of their own to tie the game heading into the second quarter, 16-16.

In the second quarter, Amosa hit a layup, but the Lions scored the next seven-straight to take the lead 23-18. Obinma hit the last shot of the half and took the Waves into the break with a one-point lead, 27-26.

The Lions went on an eight-point scoring run to take the lead back 34-27 early in the second. Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount then went back and forth in the third quarter, but the Lions had a seven-point margin, 44-37, heading into the final frame. 

LMU extended the lead 49-39, but the Waves went on a six-point scoring run to cut the deficit to four, 49-45. LMU scored on a layup, but Pepperdine had another eight-point scoring run to take the lead back 53-51. It was all Waves from there, as they closed out the game with another six consecutive points.

  • The Waves and Lions were even in shooting percentage at 45%. 
  • Pepperdine out rebounded LMU 33-30. 
  • The Waves forced 23 turnovers compared to the Lions 18.
  • Pepperdine had 25 points off of turnovers.
  • The Waves had 44 points in the paint.
