Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – The Pepperdine baseball team fell in the first game of a West Coast Conference series 9-6 to Portland on Friday night.
The Waves () got two home runs from
Billy Cook and one from
Justin Lutes, but the Pilots () got a five-run fourth inning to put the game out of reach.
BIG WAVES
- Senior utility Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) had two home runs, the first a solo home run in the fourth and a two-run home run in the sixth.
- Senior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) had a solo home run in the second inning. He also had a double in the fourth for a total of two RBI on the night.
- Freshman John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) went 2-for-3 on the night with two singles. He also scored a run.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Portland broke through for the first run of the game in the first inning, on an RBI single. The Pilots got their second run in the same inning on another RBI single to take a 2-0 lead through an inning of play.
Lutes answered back in the top of the second inning with a fly ball deep into right center field and over the wall. Portland led 2-1 through two innings.
In the bottom of the third, the Pilots scored twice more to take a 4-1 lead through three innings. It his second homer of the night
In the top of the fourth, Cook hit a deep fly ball over the wall in left center, cutting the lead in half. Lutes then doubled in Peck
, who singled after Cook's home run. Portland led 4-3 through four innings.
In the fifth, an RBI single gave the Pilots a 5-3 lead. A double and two singles scored four more to extend the lead to 9-3.
Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) singled with one out in the sixth before Cook hit his second homer of the night. The Waves loaded the bases and got a sacrifice fly from
Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton HS) to cut the lead to 9-6.
