COLLEGE STATION, Texas. — Junior distance runner Karl Winter has already made Pepperdine track history by making it to the NCAA West Preliminary.
Now, Winter (Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's HS) aims to break even more ground for Pepperdine track by attempting to qualify for the quarterfinals of the 1,500 meters this Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. CT.
In order to make it to the next race on Friday, Winter will have to either place in the top five of his 12-man heat, or be one of the next four fastest times from the four first-round heats.
General admission tickets to the event can be found via Texas A&M's ticketing website. Winter's race will also be livestreamed on the SEC Network + via the ESPN app.
FROM THE HEAT SHEET
As it stands, Winter's 3:40.58 is the fifth-fastest seed time in his heat, which includes five runners from the Pac-12, three from the WCC and two from the defending 2021 cross country champions from Northern Arizona University. Three of the runners in Winter's heat have gone sub-3:40 in their collegiate careers.
BYU freshman Lucas Bons is in the pole position of this heat with a 3:37.68 — a time converted from a 3:59.28 mile he ran at altitude on April 21. Another BYU Cougar, junior Elijah Armstrong, rounds out the WCC contingent in Winter's heat.
