Waves and Cougars Set for Rubber Match on Saturday

Box Score PROVO, Utah – The Pepperdine baseball team fell in game two to BYU 14-5 on Friday night. John Peck homered for the second game in a row.

The Waves (18-23, 10-13 WCC) got some early runs, but the Cougars' (22-27, 14-12 WCC) offense was too much to recover from.

BIG WAVES
  • Senior outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) went 3-for-5 on the night with three singles.
  • Freshman outfielder Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) went 3-for-4 with an RBI double in the seventh inning.
  • Freshman infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) had a solo home run in the top of the third inning.
  • Senior infielder Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) had one hit, but it was a big one, a bases-loaded, three-RBI double in the fourth inning.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
BYU opened up scoring in the first inning on a bases-loaded double play. The Cougars took a 1-0 lead after an inning.

The Cougars scored twice more in the second on RBI groundouts to take a 3-0 lead. A two-RBI single extended the lead to 5-0 through two innings.

Peck got the Waves on the board with a solo shot to right field, cutting the Cougars lead to 5-1 through three full innings.

In the fourth, the Waves loaded the bases thanks to a Masino single, Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) walk and a hit by pitch drawn by Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS). Modlin then hit a bases-clearing double to get the Waves to within a run.

A bases-loaded hit by pitch in the bottom of the fifth gave the Cougars a 6-4 lead. A 2-RBI double then made it 8-4. After an RBI single, the Cougars led 9-4 through five innings.

The Cougars added a run in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to take a 10-4 lead through six.

In the top of the seventh, Alexiades got the Waves started with a single. After a Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) walk, Masino doubled to deep right center field, scoring Alexiades to cut the Cougars' lead in half. BYU answered with a solo home run to get the lead back to six runs. A two-RBI single extended the lead to 13-5 through seven innings.

BYU added another run in the eighth inning on an RBI single.
