Waves Earn Series Victory on Senior Day

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team defeated Santa Clara 3-2 on Sunday, taking the series 2-1.
 
The Waves (17-22, 9-12 WCC) also celebrated 16 seniors prior to the game against the Broncos (15-29, 8-19 WCC) in their final home game at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Senior utility Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) had three hits, including a solo home run in the sixth inning, which proved to be the game-winner. He was the only Wave with multiple hits on the day.
  • Sophomore LHP Nathan Diamond (Oak Park, Ill./Oak and River Forest HS) threw 5.1 innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits, striking out two batters.
  • Junior RHP Trevor Kniskern (Pompano Beach, Fla./Lighthouse Point HS) had three innings of relief, allowing no runs and striking out three batters, picking up his first wsave of the season.
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Broncos got on the board first with a leadoff home run to start the game and take a 1-0 lead through an inning.
 
Pepperdine got on the board in the second after a single from Ryan Johnson and throwing error scored Billy Cook, who singled. Charles Masino then had an RBI groundout to give the Waves a 2-1 lead through two innings.
 
In the sixth inning, the Broncos tied the game with an RBI single. Pepperdine answered right back in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a Cook homer to deep left field, retaking the lead at 3-2 through six innings.
 
The Broncos threatened in the ninth inning, getting runners to first and second. A double play and a strikeout ended the threat and secured the victory for the Waves.

The Waves head to Provo, Utah to take on BYU in a three game set. Game one will be Thursday, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. PT.
