Men's Golf Begins Play at Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, California – RJ Manke fired a 2-under 68 to help the Pepperdine men's golf team get started at the Western Intercollegiate on Monday.

The Waves are in third place after a first-round 354 at the par-70 Pasatiempo Golf Club. This is a play-six, count-five competition. Washington shot 350 to take the lead and California is at 353.

Pepperdine and Stanford are paired together again for the second round on Tuesday. They are the final two teams to tee off beginning at 1:18 p.m. They should be the featured teams as Golf Channel again has coverage from 4-7 p.m.

- Senior RJ Manke (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) is tied for third with his 2-under 68. He's one shot back of the leaders. After an early bogey, he was flawless the rest of the way and picked up three birdies.
- Playing as an individual, junior Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) is tied for sixth with a 1-under 69. He was 3-over after three holes but had five birdies the rest of the way, including three straight on holes 11-13.
- Sophomore William Mouw (Chino, Calif./Ontario Christian HS) is tied for 12th with an even-par 70. He had three birdies, all of which came on the front nine.
- Playing as an individual, senior Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) is tied for 18th with a 71. Five of his six birdies came on the back nine, including a run of three straight on holes 12-14.
- Senior Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS), senior Joey Vrzich (El Cajon, Calif./Christian HS/Nevada), junior Joe Highsmith (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) and sophomore Dylan Menante (Carlsbad, Calif./Sage Creek HS) are all tied for 28th after 73s. Feagler had four birdies, Menante had three, Highsmith had two and Vrzich had one.
- Playing as an individual, senior Austin Murphy (Morgan Hill, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) is tied for 52nd after a 74. He had two birdies.
