Waves Jump Into First Place at Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, California – Joe Highsmith (-4) and Dylan Menante (-3) had big days to help the Pepperdine men's golf team jump into first place after Tuesday's second round at the Western Intercollegiate.

The Waves have a two-day total of a 2-over 702 (354-348) at the par-70 Pasatiempo Golf Club. This is a play-six, count-five competition. Pepperdine began the day in third place, four shots back, but the Waves' 2-under was the best score of either round thus far. They now lead Washington by six shots and Stanford by eight.

Pepperdine is going for its fourth team win of the 2020-21 school year, which would be a program record.

- Junior Joe Highsmith (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) vaulted into a tie for second place with a 2-under 138 (72-66). He was the only player in the field to avoid a bogey on Tuesday. He recorded an eagle on the par-5 ninth and birdies on 12 and 13.
- Senior RJ Manke (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) is also tied for second with a 2-under 138 (68-70). His even-par round included three birdies.
- Sophomore Dylan Menante (Carlsbad, Calif./Sage Creek HS) moved up 23 spots and into a tie for fifth place with a 1-under 139 (72-67). He had five birdies on the day, including back-to-back on 8 and 9, and again on 12 and 13.
- Playing as an individual, junior Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) is tied for ninth with an even-par 140 (69-71). He had three birdies in the second round.
- Senior Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) is tied for 13th at 142 (72-70). He was 4-over after seven holes but birdied 8, eagled 9 and birdied 13 to finish even-par.
- Sophomore William Mouw (Chino, Calif./Ontario Christian HS) is tied for 37th at 146 (70-76). He had two birdies today.
- Playing as an individual, senior Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) is tied for 37th at 146 (71-75). He had two birdies in the second round.
- Senior Joey Vrzich (El Cajon, Calif./Christian HS/Nevada) is tied for 44th at 147 (72-75). He had three birdies today.
- Playing as an individual, senior Austin Murphy (Morgan Hill, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) is tied for 51st at 148 (74-74).
