BIG WAVES
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Pepperdine opened up the scoring in the second inning. After Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) was hit by a pitch and Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) singled, Saint Mary's catcher attempted a back-pick to first, but the ball got into the outfield. Modlin advanced to second and Johnson got a great jump, allowing him to score all the way from second.
Â
The Gaels got their first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning on a home run to left. A two out single then scored two after a batter was hit by a pitch and another singled. The Gaels took a 3-1 lead through three and a half innings.
Â
Peck hit a 370-foot home run to deep left field in the bottom of the fifth to get the Waves back within one as the Gaels led 3-2 through five innings.
Â
Pepperdine had a number of chances to tie the game. In the seventh, a strikeout ended the inning with runners on first and second. And in the ninth, the Waves had two runners on again, but a line out ended the game.
