Soccer's Reyes Gets Another PCH Cup Winner

MALIBU, CaliforniaCalista Reyes cemented herself as a PCH Cup legend, as her 23rd-minute goal helped the #24 Pepperdine women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over rival Loyola Marymount in West Coast Conference play on Saturday afternoon.

Reyes (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista HS), a senior forward, scored her fourth career goal against the Lions. She tallied all three of Pepperdine's goals in victories in 2017 (1-0) and 2018 (2-1) and did it again today. Pepperdine (5-3-1, 4-1-1) has now beaten LMU (1-4-1, 1-4-0) four times in a row.

The Waves had a hard time breaking down the Lions' defense but outshot LMU 21-5 and enjoyed a significant advantage in possession. At the other end, junior goalkeeper Zoe Clevely (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS) and the Pepperdine defense posted their fourth shutout in WCC play.

GOALS

Pepperdine 23': Freshman forward Julianna Duckett (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga HS) took the ball up the right side and made a nice cut past one LMU defender to get into the box. She calmly slid a pass across the field to a wide-open Reyes, who one-timed it into an open net from eight yards out. It was Reyes' second goal of the season. Four of her nine career goals have now come against Loyola Marymount.

QUOTABLE

Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said: "I've got a ton of respect for Jenny (Bindon) and LMU's staff and their program. They've been hit hard by injuries and they did a nice job. They were tough to break down. Grateful to get the goal, and what a great goal it was. Julianna Duckett set it up, she's been playing great, and Calista Reyes had a great finish. There's something about Calista against LMU, she's got their number. Our performance deserved a second goal, but they're a tough nut to crack. They were bend, don't break, and when we got into the final 25 yards of the field they did a nice job blocking our options. It was our third game in eight days, I'm really proud of us getting through this period and we did so by playing pretty well."
