The Waves (11-10, 4-1 WCC) outhit the Gaels (11-11, 1-4 WCC) 12-7 after falling behind in the first inning.

BIG WAVES
  • Junior infielder Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) led the way for the Waves, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. He extended his hitting streak to 18 games, the best on the team by 12 games.
  • Freshman outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pauling HS) had three hits on the day and stole a base. He also scored two runs.
  • Freshman infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) went 2-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Gaels struck first in the top of the first inning. After a leadoff walk and sacrifice bunt, a single through the right side brought home the first run of the game and gave Saint Mary's a 1-0 lead through an inning of play.

The Waves tied the game in the second inning on an RBI-single from Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas HS). After Bradshaw singled and stole second, he got to third after a groundout. Schoen brought him in on a single into right field, and the game was tied at one through two innings.

In the third, Lutes hit a 375-foot line drive home run to right-center, giving the Waves a 2-1 lead through three innings.

Pepperdine struck again in the fourth inning. After three singles from Bradshaw, Peck and Joe Caparis (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS), Young hit a single up the middle to score two runs. The Waves led 4-1 after four innings.

A bases-loaded walk got the Gaels to within two runs in the top of the fifth. Michael Mahony (Huntington Beach, Calif/Edison HS) entered the game with the bases loaded and one out and induced a double play to limit the damage to just one run. Pepperdine led 4-2 through five innings.

In the sixth, Peck singled and stole second. Schoen then laid down a bunt, reaching first on a throwing error, allowing Peck to score and give the Waves a 5-2 lead. Schoen stole second and reached third on a Caparis single and then scored on a Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) fly ball.

Pepperdine added another run in the bottom of the eighth on a Young sacrifice fly. He scored Peck, who walked, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. The Waves led 7-2 after eight innings. Diamond, who entered in the sixth inning, put the Gaels down in order in the ninth to secure the series victory for the Waves.
