Waves Fall in 4-3 OT Heartbreaker to Broncos
3/23/2021 6:36:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Waves (4-3-1, 3-1-1) and the Broncos (4-0-0, 4-0-0) were the final two unbeaten teams in WCC play heading into the contest.
Trinity Watson and Leyla McFarland each scored for game-tying goals for the Waves and Aliyah Satterfield put Pepperdine ahead in the 79th minute, but Santa Clara tied it seconds later, and eventually won the match in the 105th minute.
It's the second straight season that the Waves and Broncos have played to a 4-3 result. It's the first time since 1999 that Santa Clara has won in Malibu, ending a 10-match losing streak here.
GOALS
Santa Clara 66': After the first 65 minutes of scoreless soccer, things finally opened up. The Broncos struck first when Karen Goor took the ball on the right side and played it into the box for Julie Doyle, who sent it left to Skylar Smith, who hit a sliding shot inside the left for the opening goal.
Pepperdine 67': Exactly one minute later, the Waves responded. Pepperdine won a free kick outside the box on the right side, and junior defender Trinity Watson (Ocean Beach, Calif./Point Loma HS) rocketed a shot past the wall and inside the left post. It was her team-high fourth goal of the season.
Santa Clara 72': The Broncos went back in front 2-1 as Sally Menti took a shot from the top of the box that was deflected, but it ended up on the feet of Izzy D'Aquila, who had only the goalie to beat.
Pepperdine 76': The Waves tied the game for the second time. Redshirt freshman midfielder Helen Schaefer (La Crescenta, Calif./Flintridge Prep) sent the ball right to senior defender Erin Sinai (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS), who put in a picture-perfect cross to the near post. Junior forward Leyla McFarland (Bonita, Calif./Eastlake HS), who hit a looping header over the goalkeeper. It was McFarland's second goal of the season.
Pepperdine 79': The Waves took their first and only lead at 3-2 on a terrific play in transition. Freshman midfielder Skylar Enge (Cardiff, Calif./Pacific Ridge School) took it in midfield and sent it ahead to McFarland, who hit a one-timer ahead of everyone to top of the box. Senior forward Aliyah Satterfield (Valencia, Calif./West Ranch HS) got there first, and she dribbled around the keeper and knocked it in with her left foot. It was Satterfield's second career goal and her second in three games.
Santa Clara 80': Unfortunately, Pepperdine's only lead lasted less than a minute. Going the other way, a handball was called in the box and Kelsey Turnbow converted the penalty kick.
Santa Clara 105': The match ended on Turnbow's second goal, as she took a feed from D'Aquila and scored from close.

QUOTABLE
Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said: "Both of these teams were really strong. It's about imposing your will on the other and it's a fun way to play. It's always a great game and we've had a good rivalry. I'd like to believe we're two top-25 teams in the country for a reason. It took a late double-OT goal to beat us. It was a very tactical game. I'm very proud of our effort."
