SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team won its opening West Coast Conference series of the year, defeating San Francisco 10-8 on Sunday in the series-clinching game.
The Waves (7-10, 2-1 WCC) kept the pressure on all game, outhitting the Dons (5-14, 1-2 WCC) 13-9.
BIG WAVES

- Senior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) went 2-for-5 with three RBI.
- Senior outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) had one hit, a two-RBI single and three walks.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves took an early lead thanks to a bases-loaded sacrifice fly from
Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS). After a Young leadoff single, Alexiades walked, and Johnson was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Bradshaw. In the bottom half, a double and wild pitch put a runner on third for the Dons. The runner scored on a sacrifice fly in foul territory to tie the game through an inning of play.
Pepperdine retook the lead in the second inning on another bases-loaded sacrifice fly, this time from Young, who scored
John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS)
, who led the inning off with a bunt single.
Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas HS) walked to put runners on first and second, and
Joe Caparis (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Schoen then scored on a line-drive single into left from Lutes
, giving the Waves a 3-1 lead through two innings of play.
San Francisco got a run back in the bottom of the third on a solo home run, cutting the lead to 3-2 through three innings.
Lutes got another RBI single in the top of the fourth, scoring Young, who singled up the middle, reached second on a balk and got to third thanks to a groundout. Through three and a half innings, the Waves led 4-2. The Dons got back to within a run on a leadoff solo home run in the bottom half of the fourth, and the Waves led 4-3 through four complete innings.
In the top of the fifth, Bradshaw led off with a single, and got to second when
Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Bradshaw took off for third, and the throw from the Dons' catcher sailed high, allowing Bradshaw to scamper home to give the Waves a 5-3 lead.
The Dons took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. After a single and an error, an RBI double tied the game at five. An RBI single followed, and the Dons led 6-5 through five innings.
Pepperdine loaded the bases in the top of the seventh thanks to two walks and a single. Young then walked to bring in the tying run. Alexiades then got his first hit of the game, a two-RBI single to give the Waves an 8-6 lead through seven innings.
San Francisco got a run back in the bottom of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly. The Dons then tied the game at eight on an RBI single to left field.
The Waves broke through again in the ninth. Peck walked to lead off the inning and
Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) got his first career collegiate hit to put runners on first and second. Young then doubled to deep right-center off the wall to score Peck and retake the lead at 9-8. Alexiades was walked intentionally to load the bases and bring up Lutes. Lutes drew a bases-loaded walk, giving the Waves a 10-8 lead.
Cooper Chandler (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland HS) made his first appearance of the year, replacing
Brandon Llewellyn (Colleyville, Texas/IMG Academy)
, who came on in relief of
Trevor Kniskern (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Pompano Beach HS), the game's starting pitcher. After a single, a ball got past
Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) behind the dish, but he pounced on the ball and fired down to second to throw out the runner trying to advance, stymieing the threat as Chandler got a strikeout to clinch the opening conference series.
