Waves Fall to San Francisco in Game 2

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team got two home runs from a single player for the second game in a row, as Reese Alexiades went deep twice, but fell to San Francisco 7-6 on Saturday in game two of the opening West Coast Conference series.

The Dons (5-9, 1-1 WCC) and Waves (5-13, 1-1 WCC) went back and forth during the game, which was tied three separate times, but the Waves ran out of outs too late to complete the comeback.

BIG WAVES
  • Senior outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) went 2-for-3 on the day, with both hits leaving the yard. He drove in three runs with his third and fourth home runs of the year.
  • Senior infielder Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) had two hits on the day.
  • Junior infielder Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) also had a home run on the day, the first leg of back-to-back blasts with Alexiades.
  • Sophomore LHP Nathan Diamond (Oak Park, Ill./Oak and River Forest HS) came on in relief and allowed just a single run, striking out four and giving up just three hits over four innings.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Dons got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single through the left side. A two-run home run made it 3-0 through one inning.

Pepperdine got on the board in the second, when after a single, Aharon Modlin stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. He then crossed the plate on a wild pitch for the Waves' first run. The bases then filled up thanks to a walk from Joe Caparis. Young then hit a fly ball into left, deep enough to score John Peck from third to cut the lead to just a single run. San Francisco led 3-2 through two innings.

San Francisco extended its lead in the third inning on an RBI single, taking a 4-2 lead into the fourth inning.

In the fourth inning, the Waves quickly tied the game with back-to-back home runs from Alexiades and Young on back-to-back pitches. The two teams were tied through three and a half innings. In the home half, an error allowed two runs to score for the Dons, who led 6-4 through four innings.

Pepperdine got two more runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a two-run home run for Alexiades, his second of the game. The Dons got a home run of their own in the home half of the fifth to retake the lead at 7-6 through five innings.

The Waves threatened in the seventh inning, getting the bases loaded, but could not get any more runs across.
