Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team had an explosive third inning, scoring eight runs to defeat San Francisco 16-2 in Friday's West Coast Conference opener.
The Waves (6-9, 1-0 WCC) scored all of their runs over three innings after the Dons (4-13, 0-1 WCC) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
BIG WAVES
- Freshman infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) had a career day at the plate, going 3-for-5 at the plate with two home runs and six RBI.
- Senior outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif/Mira Costa HS) went 3-for-5 on the day, driving in two runs. He boosts his season average to .516
- Sophomore utility Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) went 1-for-3, but made his one hit count, hitting a grand slam to drive in four of his five RBI.
- Senior infielder Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) drove in three runs on one hit in the game.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Dons got on the board first in the second inning. Two sacrifice flies gave the Dons a 2-0 lead after two innings of play.
Pepperdine took the lead in the top of the third. After
Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas HS) singled,
Joe Caparis (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) reached on an error.
Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) then walked to load the bases. Alexiades then hit a ball down the left field line that just stayed fair, getting to the wall for a two-run double.
Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College. Of Southern Nevada) then walked to reload the bases. Johnson then hit a ball deep into the left-center field gap, over the wall for a grand slam. Peck then added a two-run home run of his own to extend the Waves' lead to 8-2 through three innings.
The Waves added to their lead in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly and a double. After three straight walks from Lutes, Johnson and
Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS)
, Modlin hit a sacrifice fly to score Lutes from third. Then Peck added another extra base hit, dropping a ball in between two Dons for an RBI-double, scoring Johnson from second and giving the Waves a 10-2 lead through four innings.
In the fifth inning, the Waves loaded the bases yet again, this time on two walks and a single. Johnson then drew a walk to score Young from third. Modlin then doubled through the left side, plating Lutes and Alexiades to put the Waves up 13-2. Peck then blasted a ball over the left field wall for his second home run of the day, scoring Modlin and Johnson to give Pepperdine a 16-2 lead through five innings of play.
The Waves and Dons each held the other scoreless through the final four innings.
