DAVIS, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team had a four-run fourth inning, which proved to be enough for a 5-2 Sunday afternoon victory over UC Davis.
The Waves (5-9) and Aggies (5-9) split the four-game weekend series, the last non-conference series for Pepperdine before West Coast Conference play starts.
BIG WAVES
- Junior infielder Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) had the Waves' best day, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Two of those RBI came from a double in the fourth inning.
- Senior outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) went 2-for-3 on the day.
- Junior RHP Trevor Kniskern (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Pompano Beach HS) had his best outing of the year so far, throwing 6.0 innings, giving up just two runs on four hits and striking out four batters.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves got on the board first to open up the second inning.
Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) walked with one out before
John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) was hit by a pitch. After a
Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas HS) walk,
Joe Caparis (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) reached first on a fielder's choice, scoring Bradshaw from third. Pepperdine added to its lead on a Young double, scoring both Schoen and Caparis. Young reached third on a throwing error and then scored on a wild pitch, giving the Waves a 4-0 lead through two innings.
The Aggies got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run home run and cut the Waves' lead to 4-2 through four innings.
Neither team had anything going until the ninth, when after back-to-back singles from Peck and Schoen, Young hit a sacrifice fly into center field, scoring Peck for his third RBI of the game. The Waves held the Aggies off in the bottom half, securing the series split.
