Waves Fall to Aggies in Opener

DAVIS, Calif.Ryan Johnson of the Pepperdine baseball team built upon his West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors from last week, hitting two two-run home runs in the Waves' 10-5 loss to UC Davis on Friday. He now leads the Waves with five home runs on the year.
 
The Aggies (4-7) jumped out to an early lead, and the Waves (3-8) could not catch up as UC Davis had an answer for every run the Waves scored.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Sophomore utility Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) had another stellar game, going 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI.
  • Freshman outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) also went 2-for-4 with a home run of his own. He also had a triple.
  • Sophomore LHP Tyler Murrah (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) was the Waves' most effective reliever, throwing 3.0 innings, allowing just one run and scattering four hits.
GAME RECAP
 
The Aggies struck first, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning.
 
Pepperdine answered in the top of the second, getting a home run from Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS), the first of his collegiate career. After two innings, the Aggies led 5-1.
 
The Waves got on the board again in the fourth inning after a Johnson's home run. Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) walked to lead off the inning. Johnson then pulled a 2-1 pitch deep over the left-center field wall for his fourth home run of the year, leading the team. UC Davis answered with a home run of their own in the bottom half, as well as a bases-loaded single and led 8-3 after four complete innings.
 
In the sixth, Johnson again hit a two-run home run after a Lutes walk, getting the Waves to within three runs through six innings.
 
The Aggies extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh, as an RBI-single brought home a leadoff triple. Through seven innings UC Davis led 9-5. The Aggies scored again in the bottom of the eighth, taking 10-5 lead, which the Waves could not overcome in the ninth.
 
UP NEXT
The Waves and Aggies meet again tomorrow for a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. from Davis.
