RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team could not get the bats going on Friday night, falling to California Baptist 9-1 in the first game of the 2021 season.
Reese Alexiades had two of the Waves' four hits on the night.
The Lancers (1-0) were hot all game, and the Waves (0-1) could not keep up with the bats.
BIG WAVES
- Senior outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS), had the best day for the Waves, going 2-for-2 with two walks. He also scored the only run of the game for the Waves.
- Redshirt-freshman Trevor Hinkel (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS) had a solid first career outing with a final line of 4 innings pitched, two hits, two strikeouts and one earned run.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Lancers got on the board first with a solo shot in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead.
Trevor Hinkel (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS) settled in after the solo shot in the first, going 4.0 innings, giving up just two hits and the one run. He also struck out two in his collegiate debut.
After Hinkel left the game,
Dane Morrow (Malibu, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) came in, and had a 1-2-3 fifth inning. In the sixth, the Waves had runners on first and second, but could not push any runs across. In the bottom of the inning, the Lancers got a double and a single to put runners on first and third. An error in left field allowed one run to score, giving the Lancers a 2-0 lead going into the seventh inning.
Pepperdine got its first run of the game in the seventh inning, when an RBI groundout from
John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) scored Alexiades who singled through the left side to start the inning.
Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) followed up with a single of his own to put runners on first and second. A wild pitch advanced both runners before Peck hit a sharp groundball to the shortstop, allowing Alexiades to score.
The Lancers answered in the bottom half of the seventh when, after a single and a walk put runners on first and second, a single into right field plated a run. Another run came in on a sacrifice fly to give the Lancers a 4-1 lead after seven innings of play.
In the eighth inning, a leadoff single and a hit-and-run double gave the Lancers another run, taking a 5-1 lead. California Baptist scored another run on an RBI groundout. After another RBI double gave the Lancers a 7-1 lead, another home run, this time a two-run home run gave CBU a 9-1 lead going into the top of the ninth inning, where the Waves did not get any runs.

The Waves and Lancers will play game two of the series on Saturday, this time at Eddy D. Field stadium in Malibu for the Waves' home opener. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
