Waves' Bats Awaken in 10-6 Victory

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team's bats came alive at Eddy D. Field Stadium on Saturday, defeating California Baptist 10-6 in the series' second game. Justin Lutes drove in four runs on the day, including a solo home run in the second inning.

The Waves (1-1) had a huge fifth inning, scoring six runs against the Lancers (1-1) pitching staff.
BIG WAVES
  • Senior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) went 2-for-3 on the day, including a solo homer in the second inning to give the Waves their first run of the day. He also had an RBI double in the sixth inning.
  • Senior infielder Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) went 2-for-4 with two RBI on the day.
  • Redshirt-sophomore RHP Gunnar Groen (Austin, Texas/Westlake HS) threw 4.2 innings, gave up just three hits, two earned runs and struck out seven batters.
  • Sophomore LHP Nathan Diamond (Oak Park, Ill./Oak and River Forest HS) threw 2.0 innings in relief, giving up five hits and three earned runs. He picked up the win, his first of the year.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves got the scoring started early, as Lutes and Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) both hit solo home runs in the second inning. Pepperdine quickly took a 2-0 lead.

Groen was solid through his four and two-thirds innings. He struck out seven batters and gave up just three hits. Both of his earned runs were credited to him with two outs in the fifth, after Diamond relieved him. The Lancers scored those runs on two RBI singles to tie the game at two going to the bottom of the fifth.

The Waves got started when John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) led the inning off with a single. After a Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) singled to put runners on first and second, Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) walked to load the bases. Modlin was hit by a pitch to give the Waves the lead. Lutes then walked to bring in another run. Another bases-loaded walk was issued to Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS). Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) got his first collegiate RBI on an RBI single to left center, scoring Lutes from third. Peck hit for the second time in the inning and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to give the Waves an 8-2 lead after five innings.

In the bottom half of the sixth, Young walked and then stole second to set up an RBI double from Modlin. Lutes followed up with an RBI double of his own to extend the Waves' lead to 10-2 after six.

The Lancers scored three times in the seventh to cut the lead in half. They then got a solo home run in the top of the ninth, getting the score to the eventual 10-6 final.
