LA QUINTA, California – Joey Vrzich shot a 4-under 67 to help the Pepperdine men's golf team to a good start at The Prestige on Monday, as the Waves stand in second place after the first round.

Pepperdine shot a 3-under 281 at the par-71 Greg Norman Course at PGA West. The Waves are five shots back of Arizona State. A total of 24 schools are competing at the event.

PLAYER SCORES

Senior Joey Vrzich (El Cajon, Calif./Christian HS/Nevada) is in second place, three shots back of ASU's David Puig and tied with two others. Vrzich had a total of five birdies, including three on the back nine.
Senior Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) is tied for 16th place after a 1-under 70. He birdied two of his first four holes and had a total of three.
Sophomore Dylan Menante (Carlsbad, Calif./Sage Creek HS) is tied for 25th after an even-par 71. His round included two birdies.
Sophomore William Mouw (Chino, Calif./Ontario Christian HS) is tied for 52nd after a 73. He had an eagle on the par-4 ninth hole and one birdie.
Senior RJ Manke (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) is tied for 94th after a 76. He had two birdies.

INDIVIDUAL TOURNAMENT

Forty-four additional golfers are taking part at The Prestige Individual Invitational, held at the nearby par-72 Coral Mountain Golf Club. Four Waves are in the field.

Junior Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) shot a 7-under 65 and leads the tournament by three strokes. His round both began and ended with birdies and he had seven overall, with zero miscues.
Senior Austin Murphy (Morgan Hill, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) is tied for eighth place with a 2-under 70. He had two birdies and 16 pars.
Senior Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) and junior Joe Highsmith (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) are both tied for 10th place after 1-under 71s. Highsmith had a total of seven birdies, including three in his final four holes. Feagler had four birdies, including three straight on holes 3-5.

UP NEXT

The second round at the team event begins at 6:45 a.m. on Tuesday for the Waves, who will again be paired with Stanford and SMU.
