Women's Basketball Wins in Exhibition Against Cal State LA

MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine women's basketball team defeated Cal State LA, 66-41, in an exhibition on Friday night inside Firestone Fieldhouse. Becky Obinma led the way for the Waves with 17 points.

BIG WAVES
  • Redshirt junior forward Becky Obinma (Menifee, Calif./Rosary Academy/Texas Christian)shot 8-for-12 from the field, brought down eight rebounds, had two steals and blocked one shot. 
  • Redshirt junior forward Jayla Ruffus-Milner (North Hills, Calif./Harvard Westlake HS) had 10 points, shooting 5-for-8 from the field, brought down seven rebounds, had two steals and two blocked shots. 
  • Senior guard Malia Bambrick (Santa Clarita, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) had nine points, brought down six rebounds and had two assists.
  • Freshman forward Meaali'i Amosa (Garden Grove, Calif./Mater Dei HS) brought down 10 rebounds, three offensively and seven defensively.  
GAME RECAP

Cal State LA went on a six-point run before the Waves got hot and scored a consecutive 13 points to take the lead,13-6. Jayla Ruffus-Milner scored the first points for the Waves on a layup and Bambrick followed it up on a fastbreak jumper. The Golden Eagles made a first-quarter comeback hitting two three-pointers with one minute left and finished the first period leading 16-15. 

In the second quarter, the Waves came out firing with an Obinma fastbreak layup to take the lead 17-16. Cal State LA scored four points to take their lead back, but Pepperdine followed up scoring nine points to go up 26-20. It was mostly Waves after that going into halftime with an eight point lead, 33-25. Jayla Ruffus-Milner scored six in the quarter, all on layups. 

The Waves really turned it up after halftime and scored 13 points to the Golden Eagles' seven points in the third quarter, extending the lead even more at 46-32. 

The fourth quarter continued to be Pepperdine and went on a 13-point run with two minutes left to play with the score of 63-38. Jayda Ruffus-Milner hit the last three-pointer with 20 seconds left to give the Waves a 25-point lead, 66-41. 

STATS 
  • The Waves were good for 29-for-74 field goals to shoot 39.2% while only allowing the Golden Eagles 14-for-66 from the field for a 21.2% success rate. 
  • Pepperdine had the advantage at the glass, bringing down 59 rebounds compared to the 42 of Cal State LA.
  • The Waves blocked eight shots on the night compared to the Golden Eagles' two.

Pepperdine opens the regular season on Wednesday (Nov.10), visiting UCLA for a non-conference matchup. Tip-off for that game is set for 7 p.m. PT.
