FORT WORTH, Texas – The defending NCAA champion Pepperdine men's golf team played a terrific 36 holes at the Colonial Collegiate Invitational on Monday and has opened up a two-shot lead against an elite field.

The Waves shot a 561 (277-284) at the par-70 Colonial Country Club and lead Oklahoma and Wake Forest by two shots. Oklahoma State is three back and Stanford is seven shots out.

Pepperdine, which won a program-record six tournaments last season, is going for its first victory of the year in its second event of the fall.

PLAYER SCORES

Senior Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) is tied for fourth place with a 1-under 139 (69-70). He had three birdies during his 1-under round in the morning, and one birdie in his even-par afternoon. He'll begin the third round five shots back of the leader.
Senior Joe Highsmith (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) is tied for eighth place with an even-par 140 (72-68). After recording one birdie in the morning, he came back with five in the afternoon en route to a score of 2-under. Three of those birdies came in the final six holes.
Senior Joey Vrzich (El Cajon, Calif./Christian HS/Nevada) is tied for 12th at 141 (68-73). He had three birdies during his 2-under morning round, then had three more in the afternoon.
Junior William Mouw (Chino, Calif./Ontario Christian HS) is tied for 21st at 143 (70-73). He had four birdies during his even-par first round, including a run of three straight on holes 11, 12 and 13. He added two more in the second round.
Junior Dylan Menante (Carlsbad, Calif./Sage Creek HS) is tied for 31st at 145 (70-75). He had two birdies in an even-par first round, and then had two more birdies in the second.

UP NEXT

For Tuesday's third and final round, Pepperdine will be paired with Oklahoma and Wake Forest. They'll start on the first tee beginning at 9:30 a.m. CT.
