#3 Women's Soccer Falls to Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, California – The #3 Pepperdine women's soccer team fell to West Coast Conference foe Santa Clara 4-0 on Wednesday night.

The Waves (13-2-0, 4-1) and defending NCAA champion Broncos (8-4-2, 5-0) were nearly even in shots at 11-10, but despite the pressure put on the Santa Clara keeper, Pepperdine was unable to find the back of the net and saw its 11-game winning streak and seven-game shutout streak come to an end.

GOALS

Santa Clara 9': Santa Clara's second shot on goal resulted in the first goal. Eden White sent a cross inside the box to Izzy D'Aquila who sent in a header.

Santa Clara 31': Kelsey Turnbow took a corner kick from the left side and Lucy Mitchell sent a header to the back of the net for Santa Clara's second goal.

Santa Clara 35': The Broncos sent a shot directly at the Pepperdine keeper that was saved, but deflected back into play. Turnbow sent a cross to D'Aquila who sent a header that tipped off of the crossbar for their third goal of the match.

QUOTABLE

Head Coach Tim Ward said: "First of all, congrats to Santa Clara. They played a heck of a game and were just on it from the get go. In a game like this, you have to do your thing better than they do theirs. They made some changes and caught us out early, and before we could adjust, they punished us. Joelle hit the post when it was 1-0 and if that goes in I think the game balances out a bit, but they immediately went down to the other side and got a second, and that was a huge moment in the match.

"Even though we lost, we grew tonight. The lessons we learned will make us a better team not only for the rest of the regular season, but hopefully for the postseason as well."

NOTABLE
  • Calista Reyes passed Bri Visalli (83 games played, 2014-17) for all-time games played at Pepperdine and set a new school record at 84.
