#3 Waves Tie 0-0 Against Saint Mary's

MALIBU, California – The #3 Pepperdine women's soccer team went to a second overtime for the first time this season, but couldn't get on the scoreboard and settled for a 0-0 tie against Saint Mary's in West Coast Conference play on Saturday afternoon.

The Waves (13-2-1, 4-1-1) outshot the Gaels (9-2-4, 3-1-2) 13-3 and had possession for the vast majority of the matchup.

Pepperdine had some great chances throughout the entire match, including Olivia Packer, Joelle Anderson and Tori Waldeck, whose rocket shots were blocked.  Skylar Enge also had a shot which the Gaels' keeper had to make a diving save. The Waves' defense kept the opponent in the midfield and defensive zones, only showing Zoe Clevely one shot on goal that she made an outstanding save on. Calista Reyes went from end to end to block the last shot the Gaels took in the second overtime.

This game was the Waves' Senior Day and recognized seniors Anderson, Clevely, Kaliee Gifford, Devyn Gilfoy, Kelsey Hill, Packer and Reyes during pregame.

QUOTABLE

Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said: "I'm really proud of that performance, even though we were shut out. Hats off to Saint Mary's, they set up shop in a way that was very organized and very hard to break down. In a game like that, you're only going to get a few chances. There is a reason they've won a lot of games, but I was really proud of our performance, energy and desire to get the winner was apparent for everyone that was here today.

"Soccer can sometimes be frustrating and we dominated possession, but it was hard to create clear and cut looks. We're fortunate enough that we didn't give away a goal because we were pressing so high and hard to get the goal that we almost got hit on a counter. So, super proud of the girls for staying in there and getting another shutout. Shutouts are good, ties are better than losses and we're still on track to get to the postseason. We're going to learn from it.

"The other thing I think was interesting about this week is that in the last two games we've seen two things that we haven't seen all year tactically. I think long term that's going to grow this group and sometimes you can't prepare for something you haven't seen. We were given two different looks and two different approaches to the game that we haven't seen all year and long-term it'll grow us."

NOTABLE
  • Clevely is now tied for second on the Waves' single-season solo shutout list with 10 and in sole possession of fifth on the career all-time list for solo shutouts with 16.
