WESTLAKE VILLAGE, California – The Pepperdine men's golf team's spring season got off to a tough start on Monday at the Waves' own Southwestern Invitational, presented by Topgolf, on a cold and windy day.

The top-ranked Waves are in ninth place after an opening-round 308 at the par-72 North Ranch Country Club, 16 shots back of the leader, Arizona State. The average score for all 66 players was 77.12. Three Waves are in the top 20, but each of those three are playing as individuals.

PLAYER SCORES

Playing as an individual, senior Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) had the Waves' best round of the day, an even-par 72, good for a tie for sixth place. After a couple of early bogeys, he came back with birdies on 6 and 12 to get back to even-par. His third and final birdie came at 17 to again put him at even-par.
Playing as an individual, senior RJ Manke (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) shot a 74 and is tied for 15th place. He had three birdies.
Playing as an individual, junior Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) posted a 75 and is tied for 18th place. He had three birdies.
Senior Joey Vrzich (El Cajon, Calif./Christian HS/Nevada) and sophomore Dylan Menante (Carlsbad, Calif./Sage Creek HS) are both tied for 23rd place after 76s. Menante had three birdies and Vrzich had two.
Junior Joe Highsmith (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) is tied for 28th place after recording a 77. He had three birdies.
Senior Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) is tied for 44th place after a 79. He had two birdies.
Sophomore William Mouw (Chino, Calif./Ontario Christian HS) and senior Austin Murphy (Morgan Hill, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) – who is playing as an individual – are tied for 51st place after 80s. Murphy had a pair of birdies.

UP NEXT

Due to an anticipated frost delay, round two has been changed to a 9:10 a.m. start on Tuesday. The Waves, paired again with California, Georgia Tech and San Diego State, will tee off #1 starting at 10:20 a.m. Because of COVID-19 protocols, spectators are not permitted. There will again be live coverage on the Golf Channel from 1:30-4:30 p.m. PT.
