MALIBU, California – Who are the best Waves ever to wear a particular number on their jersey or cap? This series will aim to identify the most accomplished Pepperdine student-athletes, number by number.
 
Today, the greats who played baseball are listed, one through 55.
 
An important note on how the players were selected: Complete numerical rosters for baseball only go back to 1971. In some cases, additional standout student-athletes from prior to those years were identified. Any student-athlete who received at least all-conference honors during this time, and others of note, were included based on current available information.

  • Tim Gloyd (Auburn, Calif./Sacramento City College) was all-conference first team in 1979. The infielder set Pepperdine's single-season record for stolen bases that year with 67 and batted .326 for a team that made the College World Series.
  • Larry Lee (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) was all-conference first team in 1982. The infielder batted .324 that season with 51 RBI.
  • Danny Worth (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) was a three-time all-conference honoree, including the 2007 first team. The infielder batted .320 for his three-year career, including .344 with 36 RBI in 2007. He went on to play six seasons in MLB and is currently an assistant coach with the Waves.
  • Denny Duron (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) was the WCC Defensive Player of the Year in 2009. The infielder hit .288 in 184 games over four seasons.
  • Drew Hacker (Moorpark, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) was all-conference honorable mention in 2013. The infielder played three seasons with the Waves.

  • Skip Willis (Pacoima, Calif.) was all-conference first team three times between 1973 and 1975. The outfielder is still the program's all-time leader in stolen bases (148). He batted an even .300 over 183 games in his four-year career. He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 1989.
  • David Rhoades (Hayden, Ariz./Yavapai College) played two seasons (1982 and 1983) after transferring in. He went on to work in the athletic department in various capacities for more than 20 years.
  • Paul Faries (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS) was an All-American third teamer and the WCC co-Player of the Year in 1987, as well as a three-time all-conference first team pick. He is the program's all-time leader in games played (249). The infielder batted .341 and recorded 165 RBI in his four-year career. He played four years in MLB and was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017.
  • Jim Doyle (Fountain Valley, Calif./Fountain Valley HS) was all-conference first team in 1990. The infielder hit .307 for his four-year career, including .323 with 44 RBI as a senior.
  • Tony Garcia (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley HS) was all-conference twice, including the first team in 2001. The infielder hit .354 that season with six homers and 38 RBI.
  • Nick Kliebert (Norco, Calif./Norco HS) was twice all-conference, including the first team in 2006. He was also the WCC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2006. The infielder batted .340 as a senior and hit .294 over his four-year career.
  • Aaron Gates (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) was all-conference first team in 2011. The left-handed pitcher recorded a 3.15 ERA in 14 starts that season.
  • Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) was an All-American third team pick in 2014 and was twice all-conference. The infielder hit 14 home runs as a junior, and had a career batting average of .289 over his three seasons.

  • Andy Stankiewicz (Cerritos, Calif.) switched to #3 in 1986 and was all-conference second team. The infielder batted .288 that season and was a career .285 hitter over his four seasons, while stealing 101 bases. He went on to play seven years in MLB. He is currently the head coach at Grand Canyon.
  • Chris Martin (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton HS) was an All-American in 1990 after switching from #23. The infielder hit .358 that season with 14 home runs and 65 RBI.
  • John Sacchi (Los Angeles, Calif./California) was all-conference second team in 1993. The infielder batted .369 that season.
  • David Matranga (Orange, Calif./Orange HS) was all-conference twice, including the first team in 1997. The infielder hit .300 for his three-year career and had 20 home runs and 103 RBI. He went on to play two seasons in MLB.
  • Jacob Barrack (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista HS) made the all-conference first team in 2003 and 2004. The right-handed pitcher won 17 games over those two seasons. He had four-year career totals of a 25-11 record and a 3.86 ERA.
  • Adrian Ortiz (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Puerto Rico Baseball Academy) made three all-conference teams, including the 2007 first team. The outfielder had a career batting average of .320 over his three seasons, including .342 in 2007.
  • Chase d'Arnaud (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) switched to #3 in 2008 and was all-conference honorable mention. The infielder hit .314 that season with 50 RBI. He was a career .309 hitter over his three seasons. He went on to play seven years in MLB.
  • Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) was All-American honorable mention, the Brooks Wallace Award-winner for the nation's top shortstop and the WCC Defensive Player of the Year in 2012, and a two-time all-conference honoree. He batted .339 in his final season with Waves. Vincej went on to play two seasons in MLB.
  • Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) was all-conference first team in 2013 and 2014. The infielder had career bests of .287 hitting in 2013 and 33 RBI in 2014.
  • Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) was all-conference first team in in 2015. The outfielder hit .309 that season with 26 RBI.
  • Quincy McAfee (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) was all-conference second team in 2018. The infielder played in 149 games in his three seasons and had 159 hits and 58 RBI.

  • Bob Helsom (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo HS) hit .346 with a team-high 62 RBI for the 1979 College World Series team. The outfielder collected four-year totals of 211 hits, 22 home runs and 148 RBI.
  • John Damon (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento City College) made the all-conference first team in 1981. He batted .337 that season and the infielder had a .324 career average in his two seasons.
  • Doug Simons (Woodland Hills, Calif./Oxnard College) was all-conference first team in 1987 before switching to #19. The left-handed pitcher went 11-4 with a 3.43 ERA that season.
  • David Uribes (West Covina, Calif./South Hills HS) was all-conference all four years (2003-06), including three times on the first team. The infielder is the program's all-time leader in hits (328) and runs scored (232). He had a .333 career batting average, including .374 as a senior.

  • Jeff Hancock (Torrance, Calif./El Camino College) was all-conference first team in 1976. The outfielder batted .340 that season and hit .327 over his three seasons.
  • Mike Gates (Reseda, Calif./Pierce College) was an All-American first team pick in 1979. He made the 1979 All-College World Series team. The infielder hit .359 that season with 11 home runs. He went on to play two years in MLB.
  • David Lovell (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha HS) was all-conference honorable mention in 1991 and 1993. The infielder batted .291 for his four-year career.
  • Dane Sardinha (Kahuku, Hawai'i/Kamehameha HS) was an All-American first team selection and the WCC Player of the Year in 2000 and an All-American third team pick in 1999. He was three-time all-conference, including twice on the first team. The catcher is the program's all-time leader in home runs (45). He went on to play six seasons in MLB.
  • Cory Brightwell (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights HS) was all-conference honorable mention in 2002. The outfielder hit .326 with 11 home runs that season and hit .296 for his four-year career.
  • Nate Simon (Duvall, Wash./Tulane) was all-conference first team in 2009. The outfielder hit .317 with nine home runs and 51 RBI that season, and hit .311 for his two years with the Waves.
  • Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) was all-conference second team in 2016. The infielder hit .277 with 12 home runs that season.

  • Jim Brinton played from 1955-57 and was on Pepperdine's first two teams to advance to the NCAA District Playoffs. He batted .293 as a senior. He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.
  • Ray Sims played from 1956-60. As a senior, he went 8-4 with 2.94 ERA and struck out 96 in 93 1/3 innings. He held the single-season strikeout record until 1983. He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of fame in 1980.
  • Martin Montano (Redondo Beach, Calif./South HS) was all-conference first team in 1984. He batted .353 with 44 RBI and went 7-7 with five saves on the mound that season.
  • Steve Kirkpatrick (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Mater Dei HS) was all-conference first team in 1986. The outfielder batted .343 that season and hit .330 over his three seasons with 99 RBI.
  • Matt Howard (Irvine, Calif./Marist School) was all-conference first team in 1989. He hit .346 with 45 RBI as a senior and had four-year totals of a .322 batting average, 16 home runs and 117 RBI. He went on to play one season in MLB.
  • Damon Katz (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista HS) was twice all-conference, including the first team in 1999. The infielder batted .343 that season and was a career .284 hitter over four seasons with 106 total RBI.
  • Donald Brown (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) was twice all-conference, including the first team in 2007. The outfielder batted .328 that season and had career totals of a .290 batting average, 11 home runs and 120 RBI.

  • Dan Cowgill (North Hollywood, Calif./Los Angeles City College) was all-conference first team in 1975. The catcher hit a career .293 with 11 home runs and 68 RBI over his three seasons.
  • Nezi Balelo (San Diego, Calif.) was all-conference first team in 1985. The infielder batted .277 with eight home runs, 40 RBI and 24 stolen bases that season.
  • Andy Lopez, who was the head coach from 1989-94, led the Waves to the 1992 national championship and won 241 games, wore #7. He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999.
  • Dennis Konrady (Eugene, Ore./Riverside City College) was all-conference twice, including the first team in 1995. The infielder hit an even .300 for his two seasons with a total of 56 RBI.
  • Randy Wolf (Canoga Park, Calif./El Camino Real HS) switched from #43 in 1997 and earned All-American first team honors and was the WCC Pitcher of the Year. The left-hander went 9-4 with a 1.79 ERA that season. He is Pepperdine's all-time leader in strikeouts (328). He went on to play 16 years in MLB. Wolf was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.
  • Jeremy Coronado (Chino, Calif./Don Lugo HS) was all-conference second team in 2000. The outfielder hit .352 that season with 44 RBI.
  • Steve Rodriguez wore #7 for his 12 seasons (2004-15) as head coach, leading the Waves to 401 victories. He is now the head coach at Baylor. He wore #9 as a player. He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.
  • Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) switched from #33 and earned all-conference first team honors in 2017. The catcher had a .314 career batting average with 101 RBI over four seasons. He was also a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2017.

  • Tom Soto (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo HS) was all-conference first team in 1975 and 1977. The infielder hit .325 as a junior and had a .292 career average over his four seasons.
  • Keven Dell'Amico (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola HS) was all-conference three times, including the first team in 1993. The outfielder batted .313 with 31 RBI that season and hit .307 combined over his four seasons.
  • Woody Cliffords (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real HS) was twice all-conference, including the first team in 2001. The outfielder hit .330 or better all three of his seasons and had career numbers of a .338 batting average, 11 home runs, 106 RBI and 41 stolen bases.
  • Patrick Rooney (Anaheim, Calif./Esperanza HS) was all-conference honorable mention in 2003. He hit .312 that season with 26 RBI.
  • Chase d'Arnaud (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) was all-conference first team in 2006. He later switched to #3. He was a career .309 hitter over his three seasons. He went on to play seven years in MLB.
  • Bryce Mendonca (San Leandro, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd HS/Chabot College) was all-conference first team in 2008. The infielder hit .332 that season and stole 32 bases.
  • Colin Rooney (Anaheim, Calif./Esperanza HS) was all-conference first team in 2010. Over his two seasons, the infielder hit .310 with nine home runs and 66 RBI.
  • Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawai'i/Konawaena HS) was all-conference first team in 2013. The catcher batted .309 that season.

  • Jesus "Carlo" Mejia (San Fernando, Calif./Los Angeles City College) was an All-American in 1975 and a two-time all-conference first teamer. He hit .344 in 1974 and .313 in 1975.
  • Rick Hirtensteiner (Ventura, Calif./Buena HS) was an All-American first team pick and the WCC Player of the Year in 1989. He made all-conference all four years (1986-89), three times on the first team. The outfielder batted .366 with 12 home runs and 41 RBI as a senior and hit .336 with 28 home runs for his career. He was a CoSIDA Academic All-American and the WCC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1989. He's been a member of Pepperdine's coaching staff for 20 seasons and the head coach for the past five years. Hirtensteiner was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.
  • Steve Rodriguez (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley HS) was an All-American first team selection in 1991 and made the third team in 1992. He was the WCC Player of the Year and made the All-College World Series team in 1992, and was a three-time all-conference honoree. Rodriguez batted .419 in 1991 and .367 for his three-year career. He went on to play two seasons in MLB. He returned to Pepperdine and was head coach for 12 seasons, and is now the head coach at Baylor. He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.
  • David Sugden (West Vancouver, B.C./West Vancouver HS) was all-conference first team in 1998. The catcher batted .385 that season and hit .332 for his career.
  • Nick Gaudi (Lancaster, Calif./Paraclete HS) was all-conference first team in 2008 and 2009. The right-handed relief pitcher posted an 11-4 career record with a 3.34 ERA and 24 saves.
  • Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) was an All-American second team selection and the WCC Player of the Year in 2012, and a three-time all-conference honoree. The infielder batted .366 with 53 RBI that season and finished with a .320 average and 104 RBI for his career.

  • Rick Nicholson (Anaheim, Calif./Loara HS) was an Academic All-American in 1972.
  • Steve Smith (Valencia, Calif./College of the Canyons) made the all-conference first team in 1975. The infielder hit .320 that season. He went on to win a World Series ring in 2008 as a coach with the Philadelphia Phillies. He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.
  • Bob Ganger (Sylmar, Calif./Pierce College) made the all-conference first team in 1978. The right-handed pitcher went 11-3 that season with a 1.83 ERA.
  • Greg Gregory (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan HS) was all-conference honorable mention in 1993 and 1996. The left-handed pitcher won 21 games in his four seasons and had a 3.82 ERA.
  • Ty Ferrer (Santa Ynez, Calif./UC Santa Barbara) was all-conference first team in 1997. The infielder batted .320 with 45 RBI that season.
  • Duke Sardinha (Kahuku, Hawai'i/Kamehameha HS) was all-conference honorable mention in 2002. The infielder hit .315 with 45 RBI that season.

  • Tim Alcantar (Culver City, Calif./St. Bernard's HS) was all-conference first team in 1972. The outfielder batted .291 that season.
  • Jorge Paz (Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS) was all-conference honorable mention in 1991. The outfielder hit .328 that season.
  • G.J. Raymundo (Clovis, Calif./Fresno City College) was all-conference first team in 1998 and 1999. The infielder hit .345 with 13 home runs in 1998 and .379 with 16 home runs in 1999.
  • Danny Garcia (San Bernardino, Calif./North HS) made the all-conference first team in 2000 and 2001. The infielder hit .341 for his three-year career with 129 RBI, and had a .374 average in 2001. He went on to play two years in MLB.
  • Ed Montague (San Mateo, Calif./College of San Mateo) was chosen to the all-conference first team in 2002. The outfielder batted .359 that season.
  • Kea Kometani (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Punahou School) was twice all-conference honorable mention in 2004 and 2005. The right-handed pitcher won 21 games in his four seasons and went 10-5 with a 3.17 ERA as a senior.

  • Gail Hopkins (Long Beach, Calif./Jordan HS) was Pepperdine's first baseball All-American in 1963, and he batted .375 that season. He served as Pepperdine's head coach for one season (1968) and became Pepperdine's first alum to play in MLB for seven seasons. Dr. Hopkins is believed to be the only major league baseball to player to earn both an M.D. and a Ph.D. He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 1980.
  • Jalal Leach (Novato, Calif./San Marin HS) made the all-conference second team in 1989 and 1990. The outfielder batted .363 with 37 RBI his final season and was a career .336 hitter. He went on to play one season in MLB.
  • Jason LeBlanc (Whittier, Calif./La Serna HS) was all-conference three times, including the first team in 1993. The right-handed pitcher won 20 games over his four seasons.
  • Will Ohman (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa HS) made the all-conference second team in 1998. The left-handed pitcher recorded a 2.80 ERA with five saves as a reliever that season. He went on to play 10 years in MLB.
  • Robert Dickmann (Woodland Hills, Calif./UCLA) was all-conference honorable mention in 2010. The left-handed pitcher went 8-4 that season and won 17 games in his four seasons.
  • Cooper Chandler (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland HS) was all-conference second team in 2018. The right-handed pitcher went 6-3 with a 3.99 ERA that season.

  • Clark Rex (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) played from 1956-60 and was Pepperdine's Athlete of the Year as a senior, when he batted .310 with 27 RBI. He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 1980.
  • Steve Erickson (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS) was the WCC co-Player of the Year in 1987 and a two-time all-conference selection. The outfielder hit .393 with 41 RBI that season and was a career .319 hitter with 18 home runs and 154 RBI.
  • David Newhan (Yorba Linda, Calif./Georgia Tech) was all-conference first team in 1995. The infielder batted .367 that season with 11 home runs and 48 RBI. He went on to play eight seasons in MLB.
  • Matt Bywater (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) was all-conference three times, including the first team in 2009 and 2010. The left-handed pitcher went 19-9 with a 3.74 ERA over his three seasons.
  • Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) was all-conference honorable mention in 2013. The right-handed pitcher posted a 1.50 ERA and recorded 14 saves as a reliever that season.
  • Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) was all-conference honorable mention in 2015. The outfielder hit .289 with 23 RBI that season.

  • Wayne Wright was the head coach for eight seasons (1969-76) and won 195 games. He also serves as the Athletic Director for 21 years. He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 1984.
  • Scott Vollmer (Irvine, Calif./Irvine HS) was an All-American in 1993. He made the All-College World Series team in 1992 and was a three-time all-conference honoree. The catcher batted .301 over his four seasons and had 18 home runs and 129 RBI.
  • Keith McDonald (Yorba Linda, Calif./Cypress HS) played one season for the Waves (1994) as a catcher. He went on to play two seasons in MLB.

  • Bill Bathe (Whittier, Calif./Fullerton College) hit .363 with 10 home runs and 48 RBI in 1981 in 1981, his only season with the Waves. The catcher went on to play three years in MLB.
  • Chad Kreuter (Homestead, Fla.) collected 136 hits, 12 home runs and 95 RBI in his three seasons (1983-85). The catcher went on to play 16 seasons in MLB.
  • A.J. Puckett (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) was an All-American first team pick and the WCC Pitcher of the Year in 2016. The right-handed pitcher went 9-3 with a 1.27 ERA that season and won 18 games in his three years.

  • Scott Marrett (Woodland Hills, Calif.) was an All-American first teamer and the WCC Pitcher of the Year in 1985. The right-handed pitcher went a perfect 15-0 that season with a 2.08 ERA. He won 19 games in his three seasons.
  • Scott Shockey (El Toro, Calif./El Toro HS) earned his first all-conference award in 1987 before switching to #44. The infielder hit .284 that season and was a career .303 hitter. He is the program's all-time leader in RBI (197).
  • Austin Evans (Buda, Texas/Hays HS) was all-conference honorable mention in 2000. The outfielder batted .333 that season with 28 RBI.
  • Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Mid-Pacific Institute) was all-conference honorable mention in 2019 before switching to #2 this past season. The infielder batted .313 that season with 22 RBI.

  • Dave Curran (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) was all-conference first team in 1977. The right-handed pitcher went 6-4 with a 3.15 ERA that season.
  • Albert Arrieta (Montebello, Calif.) posted a 10-1 record with a team-best 1.58 ERA for the 1979 College World Series squad. That was his only season with the Waves.
  • Ruben Gamboa (Alhambra, Calif./Alhambra HS) was all-conference first team in 1994 and 1995. The infielder hit .366 with 30 RBI as a sophomore and .335 with 46 RBI as a junior. He was a career .317 hitter over four seasons.
  • Derek Mills (Fresno, Calif./Fresno City College) was all-conference second team in 2002. The right-handed pitcher had five wins and two saves, primarily as a reliever, that season.
  • Cole Cook (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) was all-conference first team in 2010. The right-handed pitcher won five games and had a 2.93 ERA that season.
  • Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford HS) was all-conference honorable mention in 2014. The left-handed pitcher won four games and posted a 3.04 ERA that season.

  • Dave Gorrie is Pepperdine baseball's all-time winningest head coach with 409 victories in his 10 seasons (1979-88).
  • Frank Sanchez won 257 games as head coach over seven seasons (1997-2003).
  • Brent Lewis (Jackson, Tenn./Mississippi State) made the all-conference first team in 2004. The infielder batted .336 with 52 RBI in his only season with the Waves.

  • Doug Simons (Woodland Hills, Calif./Oxnard College) switched from #4 in 1988 and was the WCC Pitcher of the Year. The left-handed pitcher went 11-3 with a 2.42 ERA and finished his three-year career with 28 wins and a 2.78 ERA. He went on to play two years in MLB.
  • Steve Duda (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul HS) was an All-American second team selection and the WCC Pitcher of the Year in 1993. He was a four-time all-conference honoree (1990-93), twice on the first team. He is Pepperdine's career leader in wins (44). The right-hander went 12-3 with a 1.64 ERA as a senior.
  • Chris Cosbey (Arcadia, Calif./Arcadia HS) was all-conference twice, including the second team in 1996, before switching to #21 and earning the award a third time. The outfielder hit .310 with 83 RBI in his career.
  • Dane Ball (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS) made the all-conference first team in 2001. The outfielder batted .320 with 30 RBI that season.
  • Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif./Cañada College) was all-conference honorable mention in 2012. The infielder hit .313 with 29 RBI that year.

  • Dayle Campbell earned All-American honors in 1965 and was a three-time all-conference player. He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 1981.
  • Peter Kuld (Canoga Park, Calif./College of the Canyons) was all-conference first team in 1987. The catcher hit .314 with 40 RBI in his only season with the Waves.
  • Gerardo Gonzalez (Arvin, Calif./Bakersfield College) made the all-conference first team in 1995 and 1996. The infielder hit .322 the first year and .338 the next and finished his two-season career with a .329 average, 15 home runs and 90 RBI.
  • Jay Gehrke (Fargo, N.D./Arizona State) wore both #20 and #36 during the 1999 season when he was an All-American first team pick. The right-handed pitcher set Pepperdine's single-season record for saves (18) that season. He recorded a 0.86 ERA in 31.1 innings.
  • Barry Enright (Stockton, Calif./St Mary's HS) was an All-American third team selection in 2007 and the WCC Pitcher of the Year in 2006, and a three-time all-conference honoree. The right-handed pitcher went 12-5 with a 1.99 ERA in 2007 and had 35 wins in his three seasons. He went on to play four years in MLB.
