MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women's basketball team added some veteran depth on Thursday, as head coach Kristen Dowling announced the signing of transfer Becky Obinma from Texas Christian.
The 6-foot-3 forward from Menifee, Calif. will sit out the 2020-21 school year (unless NCAA transfer rules change this summer) and have two seasons to play with the Waves.
Obinma saw action in 28 games for the Horned Frogs as a redshirt freshman, averaging 1.6 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. She scored a season-high eight points against Auburn on Dec. 7, as well as bringing down a season-high six rebounds.
"We are so excited to add someone of Becky's caliber to our program," Dowling said of Obinma. "She is a local product, having graduated from Rosary High School and a player who will be bringing the experience of playing Power 5 basketball to our program.
"Becky was a highly recruited player out of high school and was ranked 18th national in her position by ESPN, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. Becky comes from an amazing family, she is focused on becoming a special needs professional and she genuinely cares for those around her. She's going to make an immediate impact on and off the court by complimenting the mindset and players of our program."
In high school, she led Rosary Academy in Fullerton, Calif. to the CIF Division III championship as a junior after winning the CIF-Southern Section Division 2-AA title, earning Division 2-AA Player of the Year honors.
"I chose Pepperdine to be my new home because I felt like I was able to connect with the coaches," Obinma said. "You can tell that the word "family" means something here and I love that. Pepperdine is a beautiful school with great academics, and I truly believe that it can be my home away from home. Development is also a huge piece, and I trust that the coaching staff is willing to help me expand my home and become the player that I aspire to be. We are building something special here!"
Obinma is one of five newcomers to the Waves so far, along with freshmen Kendyl Carson, Isabel Montoya, Jane Nwaba and Rosemary Odebunni.
