MONDAY: The Pepperdine women's basketball team has advanced to the semifinals of the University Credit Union West Coast Conference Tournament for the second straight year and the 16th time in program history. The sixth-seeded Waves, led by first-year coach
Kristen Dowling, now face second-seeded San Diego on Monday afternoon.
GAME #31: Monday (March 9) at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada: sixth-seeded Pepperdine (16-14, 8-10) vs. second-seeded San Diego (19-10, 13-5) at 2 p.m. (30 minutes after the first semifinal).
COVERAGE: Monday's game will be broadcast by BYUtv, NBC Sports Bay Area, ROOT Sports Northwest, AT&T Sportsnet Rocky Mountain and the WCC Network. There will also be an audio-only broadcast through WaveCasts with Hall of Fame broadcaster Al Epstein for each Pepperdine game.
SERIES VS. SAN DIEGO: Pepperdine is 48-36 all-time against USD. Both teams won at home this season (the Waves by 16 in Malibu on Dec. 28, the Toreros by four in the regular-season finale on Feb. 29). The Waves have won six of the last eight meetings overall. At the WCC Tournament, the Toreros have a 4-1 edge. Pepperdine's win came in the 2003 semifinals. San Diego won in the 1993 semifinals, 2000 championship, 2009 quarterfinals and 2011 quarterfinals.
WCC SECOND ROUND: Hannah Friend scored 26 points, one shy of her season best, and the Waves overcame an 11-point second half deficit to beat seventh-seeded Saint Mary's, 87-72, on Friday. SMC led 48-37 a minute into the third quarter, but the Waves outscored the Gaels by 26 the rest of the way. Pepperdine led 61-60 in the fourth quarter when the Waves went on an 11-0 run. The Waves forced 17 turnovers and committed only six while enjoying a 27-9 edge in points off turnovers. Four Pepperdine starters combined for 78 points as the Waves had a season high for points.
Monique Andriuolo had 21 points and 12 rebounds,
Malia Bambrick scored 19 points and
Barbara Sitanggan had 12 points and nine assists.
WCC QUARTERFINAL: The Waves' best defensive effort of the season propelled the Waves to a 62-51 upset over third-seeded BYU on Saturday. They held the Cougars to 32.7% shooting and set a season low for points allowed. Pepperdine led the game for 34:33 and only allowed BYU to lead for 13 seconds. The Waves were up 45-43 after three quarters and outscored the Cougars 17-8 in the fourth.
Hannah Friend scored 15 points to lead the Waves. Pepperdine beat BYU at the WCC Tournament for the first time in four tries, and for the first time ever away from Malibu.
WCC TOURNAMENT HISTORY: The Waves now have an overall record of 27-24 in their 28th WCC Tournament. They won three championships in 2002, 2003 and 2006. Pepperdine has a record of 6-9 in the semifinals. The Waves are attempting to advance to the championship for the first time since 2010. This is the seventh time that Pepperdine has won multiple games at a WCC Tournament (the last time was also in 2010).
WCC POSTSEASON AWARDS: Two Waves were named to All-WCC postseason teams this year.
Barbara Sitanggan was named to the first team and
Jayla Ruffus-Milner was named to the All-Freshman team. Sitanggan was previously named All-WCC honorable mention in 2019 and All-Freshman in 2017.
NUMBERS: Barbara Sitanggan became the Pepperdine women's basketball all-time leader in assists on February 8 when she dished out her 453rd career assist against Santa Clara in the second quarter. She currently sits at 498 career assists. Sitanggan is also third all-time in games started (105), fifth in steals (204), fifth in assists per game (4.4) and fifth in free throws made (377). Sitanggan ranks third in the nation in assist/turnover ratio (3.56, 139 assists and 39 turnovers) ...
