Box Score MIAMI – The Pepperdine baseball team kept its offensive onslaught going and picked up its second weekend sweep in a row, defeating Florida International 12-2 on Sunday.
Joe Caparis hit his first home run of the season, a three-run blast, to help lift the Waves (10-1) complete the sweep of the Panthers (7-3).
BIG WAVES
- Senior catcher Joe Caparis (Palos Verdes, Estates/Palos Verdes HS) hit his first home run of the year, deep to left-center field.
- Sophomore infielder Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) went 3-for-5 on the day with one RBI.
- Senior infielder Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) had a 3-for-5 day with two RBI.
- Redshirt-junior outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) went 2-for-5 with three RBI,
- Sophomore RHP Trevor Kniskern (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Pompano Beach HS) threw 7.0 innings and gave up just four hits, striking out seven.
GAME RECAP
The Waves got going early. Cook tripled into deep right-center field, scoring Young who singled to lead off the game. Cook was then brought in to score on an Alexiades single through the left side. After one inning, the Waves led 2-0.
In the second, after
Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) singled up the middle, Young reached on an error, allowing Johnson to score from first. Young then took third on a wild pitch and scored on an Modlin single. After two full innings, Pepperdine led 4-0.
In the fourth, the Waves loaded the bases after a Young single, a Modlin double and an intentional walk given to
Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada). Two runs scored on an Alexiades single to make it 6-0 Waves. Then, Caparis hit a ball to deep left center field and over the fence to give the Waves a 9-0 lead.
In the fifth, the Waves got runners to the corners before Modlin hit a fly ball deep enough into center field for a sacrifice fly. After five innings, the Waves led 10-0.
In the top of the eighth, Johnson doubled down the line, scoring
Mike Malinchak (Delray Beach, Fla./American Heritage HS) singled. Young then singled up the middle to score Johnson after Johnson reached third on a wild pitch. The Panthers got two runs in the eighth off a pinch-hit home run. The Waves led 12-2 after eight full innings.
Kniskern went seven solid innings, striking out seven and scattering just four hits. He picked up his second win of the year.
