Lutes Hits Two Bombs in Waves’ 12-Inning Win

MIAMI Justin Lutes played hero as the Pepperdine baseball team defeated Florida International 9-8 in 12 innings on Friday night. Lutes hit two home runs in the game, including a 2-run home run in the top of the 12th to give the Waves the win.

The Panthers (7-1) scored four runs in the ninth to send the game into extras and scored one in the bottom of the 12th, but the Waves' (8-1) pitching held up to get the victory.

BIG WAVES
  • Senior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) went 2-for-5, with both hits clearing the fence in right field for home runs.
  • Junior utility Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) went 2-for-4 on the night, including a third-inning three-run home run to get the scoring started for the Waves.
  • Sophomore infielder Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) had two hits on the night for the Waves.
  • Redshirt-Junior RHP Wil Jensen (Murray, Utah/Cottonwood HS) threw 6.2 innings, striking out four and giving up three runs.
  • Freshman reliever Shane Telfer () threw 3.1 innings in relief, giving up just a single run and getting the first victory of his collegiate career.

GAME RECAP
The Waves got the scoring started in the third inning when, after a walk and a single, Cook launched a ball to deep right field, sailing over the fence for a three-run home run. After three innings, the Waves led 3-0.

Pepperdine starter Jensen was cruising through six innings. After striking out the side in the first, the righty allowed just two hits through six. In the seventh, he got two outs before the Panthers scored three runs on two doubles and a single. Dane Morrow (Malibu, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) came in and closed out the inning. The two teams were tied after seven innings.

The Waves answered right back, as in the eighth, Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) reached on a fielder's choice, and a throwing error allowed Young to score from second. Lutes came up and clobbered a ball over the right field fence for his first home run of the game, a three-run shot to give the Waves a 7-3 lead.
The lead held until the bottom of the ninth, when the Panthers got four runs thanks to two singles, a bases-loaded walk and a double that scored two. The would-be winning run was thrown out at home by a great throw from left field by Mike Malinchak (Delray Beach, Fla./American Heritage HS) to preserve the 7-7 tie.

Both teams were held scoreless until the 12th, when after a Modlin single, Lutes came up and hit a ball to the same spot as his first home run, clearing the fence and giving the Waves the 9-7 lead. FIU scored once in the bottom of the 12th, but Telfer shut the door with a called strike three to end the game.
