UCLA Hands Waves First Loss

LOS ANGELES – The Pepperdine baseball team fell for the first time this season, dropping a Wednesday game to #10 UCLA 8-2. Billy Cook and Aharon Modlin got the only to RBI for the Waves on the night.

The Waves (7-1) never led, as the Bruins (8-0) scored in the second inning.

BIG WAVES
  • Junior utility Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) went 1-for-4 with an RBI single.
  • Senior infielder Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) had the Waves' only other RBI, and RBI groundout.
  • Redshirt-Sophomore RHP Gunnar Groen (Austin, Texas/Westlake HS) threw 5.1 innings, giving up three runs and seven hits. He struck out four batters.

GAME RECAP
The Bruins got the scoring started right away, getting two runs in the first inning on a two-run home run.

Pepperdine cut into the lead in the sixth, when after a Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) single and a Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) walk, Cook lined a single up the middle to score the Waves' first run. In the bottom of the sixth, the Bruins got another run of their own, giving them a 3-1 lead after six.

UCLA scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring on two RBI singles and two sacrifice flies. The Bruins took a 7-1 lead into the eighth.

Cook tripled to right field to start the eighth, and he was brought in on a Modlin groundout to cut the Bruins' lead to 7-2. However, the Waves could not get anything else going, and the Bruins scored one in the bottom of the eighth to take the 8-2 victory.
