TEMPE, Ariz. – The Pepperdine baseball team held Minnesota just enough in the final frame to win its second game in a row on Saturday, defeating the Gophers 8-6.
Justin Lutes had a heck of a day, going 4-for-4 with two triples and two RBI in the second game of the Angels College Classic.
The Waves (2-0) led the Gophers (1-1) 8-2 going into the final frame, but held on to take the victory after Minnesota scored four times in the ninth.
BIG WAVES
- Senior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) had the best day of anyone on the diamond, going 4-for-4 with two triples and a pair of RBI. He also scored three times.
- Senior infielder Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) went 3-for-4 with three runs and a walk.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Minnesota struck first scoring twice in the second inning, on a single and passed ball. The Waves answered right back, scoring two runs of their own in the second, both on bases-loaded walks.
Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) was the recipient of the first walk, and
Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) drew the second. The game was tied at two after two.
The Waves scored twice more in the third. The first run came from another bases-loaded walk drawn by
Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS).
David LeBioda (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel HS) then singled in Lutes from third. Pepperdine took a 4-2 lead into the fourth.
In the sixth,
Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) got on board, as did Modlin before Lutes hit the first of his two triples, driving in the pair. The two-RBI triple gave the Waves a 6-2 lead before a
Joe Caparis (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) grounded into a double play, but scored Lutes from third to give the Waves a 7-2 lead going into the seventh.
After Modlin got to third in the eighth after a single and a first-to-third advancement on another single,
Reese Alexiades(Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) hit into a fielder's choice to give the Waves an 8-2 lead going into the ninth.
The Gophers got four runs in the ninth, one on a bases-loaded walk, two on a single, and the final on a passed ball. The Waves kept them from scoring anymore and picked up the victory.
Cooper Chandler (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland HS) threw 5.0 innings, struck out four and gave up just a single earned run in his first win of the year.
