MALIBU, Calif. – Thanks to double-digit scoring performances from both
Malia Bambrick and
Cheyenne Givens, the Pepperdine women's basketball team won its game against CSU Bakersfield 69-58 on Tuesday night.
The Waves (2-0) never trailed the Roadrunners (1-1) in the contest, and remain unbeaten in Firestone Fieldhouse this season.
BIG WAVES
- Junior guard Malia Bambrick (Santa Clarita, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) led the Waves with 10 points, shooting 6-for-12 from the field and 3-for-5 from three.
- Junior guard Cheyenne Givens (Gardena, Calif./LA Trade Tech) had 10 points, shooting 3-for-10 and 1-for-3 from three. She was also 3-for-5 from the free throw line.
- Redshirt-sophomore guard Jayla Ruffus-Milner (North Hills, Calif./Harvard Westlake HS) had seven points, and had a game-high 11 rebounds. She also had three assists.
- Freshman forward Jane Nwaba (Carson, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) had nine points and four rebounds.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves got out to a good start, with Bambrick scoring five of the first seven points of the game. Pepperdine kept up the offense from there, as a three-pointer from Bambrick gave the Waves another five-point lead with two minutes left in the quarter. A jumper from Nwaba late gave the Waves a 22-18 lead going to the second quarter.
Pepperdine started the second quarter on a 7-0 run to push their lead to 11 points at 29-18. The Roadrunners got to within seven points with just over two minutes to play in the half, but three free throws pushed the lead to ten, and a
Monique Andriuolo (Melbourne, Australia/Maribyrnong Secondary College) layup gave the Waves a 46-34 lead going into the halftime break.
To start the second half, the Waves and Roadrunners were relatively even, trading buckets until Bambrick hit a three-pointer to put the Waves up 51-40 with eight minutes in the third. The Two teams again traded baskets through the quarter, with the Waves leading 59-46 going into the final 10 minutes of play.
The Waves took their largest lead of the night at 62-46 after a
Kendyl Carson (Juneau, Alaska/Juneau Douglas HS) three-pointer. The Roadrunners gave the Waves a little pressure, but could not get a comeback going, giving the Waves the 11-point victory.
