Waves Survive Overtime Win at Home

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women's basketball team outscored Santa Clara 13-5 in an overtime period to take the 79-71 victory on Thursday night, giving the Waves their second West Coast Conference victory. Paige Fecske led the Waves with 16 points on the night.
 
The Waves (8-7, 2-3 WCC) led by as many as 17 at one point, but the Broncos (8-7, 2-2 WCC) came back to tie the game and force the extra period.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Senior guard Paige Fecske (Studio City, Calif./Chaminade HS) had 16 points, shooting 5-17 on the night and making one of her two three-point attempts. She also shot 5-6 from the free throw line.
  • Senior guard Barbara Sitanggan (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) had 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. She was 6-7 from the foul line.
  • Junior forward Monique Andriuolo (Melbourne, Australia/Maribyrnong Secondary College) recorded her first-career double-double, scoring 10 points and bringing down 11 rebounds.
  • Redshirt-freshman Jayla Ruffus-Milner (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) scored 10 points as well.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The game started off hot for the Waves, who scored the game's first six points. Pepperdine held the Broncos to just 10 points in the first, taking a 19-10 lead after 10 minutes of play.
In the second, the Waves really got the offense going, taking a 17-point lead with just 2:14 left in the half after a six-point run. Santa Clara cut the lead a bit before half, but the Waves led 41-26 going into the break.
After the half, Santa Clara came roaring back. After trading baskets to start the quarter, the Broncos went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 47 with 3:34 left in the quarter. The Waves did keep pace, retaking the lead on a three-pointer from Hannah Friend (San Clemente, Calif./Sacramento State), and kept the lead going into the fourth, 54-51.
Santa Clara tied the game again to start the fourth, and took their only lead of the night on a jumper with nine minutes left. The Waves got the lead back, and had a three-point lead with 53 seconds left in regulation. After a timeout from Santa Clara, the Broncos inbounded the ball and put up a shot to try and tie the game. It missed, but a quick rebound from the Broncos and a shot from way beyond the arc sailed through the net to push the game into overtime, tied at 66.
The Waves dominated overtime, holding the Broncos to just five points to earn their second WCC victory of the year.

  • Santa Clara out-rebounded the Waves, bringing down 47 boards compared Pepperdine's 45.
