SAN LUIS OBISPO, California – The Pepperdine women's soccer team's first road match of the season ended in defeat, as despite more than doubling Cal Poly in shot attempts, the host Mustangs claimed a 2-1 victory on Friday evening.
The Mustangs (1-3-1) scored the game's first two goals before sophomore forward
Leyla McFarland (Bonita, Calif./Eastlake HS) put the Waves on the board in the 57th minute. But despite advantages of 20-9 in shots and 11-6 in shots on goal, the Waves couldn't find the equalizer.
The Waves had their opportunities. Freshman midfielder
Shelby Little (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Hillcrest Christian HS) had a chance from close in the 28th minute but had it saved. Junior forward
Joelle Anderson (San Jose, Calif./Harker School) put four of her seven shots on goal. In the 86th minute, the Waves sent in a free kick and it came out of a crowd and off the crossbar.
GOALS
Cal Poly 45': Just about 30 seconds before the halftime whistle, the Mustangs' Kylie Rojas got the ball just outside the box on the right side. She made a nice move to free herself, and then sent a perfectly placed ball into the upper-right-hand corner of the net.
Cal Poly 50': The Mustangs' Sidra Bugsch lined up to take a free kick from 20 yards out. She sent the ball low at the Waves' defensive wall, and it deflected off a Pepperdine player. With the Waves' goalkeeper heading the opposite way, the ball found back of the net.
Pepperdine 57': A counterattack wound up with junior forward
Brie Welch (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande HS) with the ball on the left side, and after a couple of dribbles, she centered the ball to a wide-open McFarland, who one-timed it home from a few yards out for her second goal of the season.
