RECAP
Starting the day with mixed doubles, the pair of senior
Ashley Lahey and San Diego's Gui Osorio found themselves down early to the team of Alexa Graham of North Carolina and Hady Habib of Texas A&M. The pair lost 6-3 and put them out of the doubles competition, but that wouldn't be the last the Waves saw of Habib and Graham.
In singles play, #32
Jessica Failla drew the short straw, as the No. 1 player in the nation in Katerina Jokic went to battle. Failla kept it close to begin, going neck and neck until the third point until Jokic pulled away and won 6-3, 6-2 to eliminate Failla.
No. 14 Lahey toyed with her second round opponent but eventually knocked off the #46 Kozarov of Furman 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. It was fate for Lahey as she then met up with #4 Ashley Graham for the second time that day and third time since the spring season. Graham, who previously eliminated Lahey in the 2019 NCAA Singles Championship earlier this year. The first set took a tie-break to finish, but it was ultimately Lahey who had the last word, defeating Graham 7-6(5), 6-1 to advance into the tournament semifinals.
Corrado Summaria had an incredible afternoon as well, after defeating the 63
rd-ranked Derkas from Fresno State on Thursday to meeting #16 Habib in the second round. Summaria fought through the first set, overcoming a tie-break 7-6(6), dropping his second set 4-6 and the coming back from being down three in the third to winning 6-3 and upsetting the #16 player in the country. Summaria then met his demise after going neck and neck in the first set 5-7 and dropping the second 3-6 to put him out of contention in the quarterfinal round.
