Women's Soccer Drops 2-1 Contest to #24 WSU

HONOLULU, HAWAI'I – Joelle Anderson scored her first goal of the season, but the Pepperdine women's soccer team's run of success against ranked Pac-12 teams came to an end against #24 Washington State, 2-1, on Sunday at the Rainbow Wahine Shootout.
Over the last 10 days the Waves (3-4-2) beat then-#2 Stanford 1-0 and tied #5 UCLA 2-2, but couldn't get another positive result against the Cougars (7-1-0).
After a scoreless first half, the Cougars struck first, and though Anderson equalized 10 minutes later, WSU got the game-winner in the 78th minute.
GOALS
WSU 56': The Cougars' Elyse Bennett opened the scoring.
Pepperdine 66': Sophomore forward Leyla McFarland (Bonita, Calif./Eastlake HS) got the ball on the left side and rolled it back toward the middle. Right around the 18-yard line, junior forward Joelle Anderson (San Jose, Calif./Harker School) ran onto the ball and one-timed it toward goal, curling it into an upper corner. It was her first goal of the season and the 15th of her career. McFarland recorded her team-high third assist of the season.
WSU 78': The Cougars' Molly Myers notched the game-winner off an assist from Brianna Alger.

Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said: "I'm bummed about the result but I'm proud of our performance. Washington State is a really good team. I don't remember playing a team this tall. They're big, tall, strong, athletic and well-coached. The first half we had a tough time getting the ball out of our half, and we defended really well when we had to. They got a goal early in the second half, but I'm proud of our resilience and effort to fight back. Joelle scored a great, great goal. It was a thing of beauty. It felt like we were going to maybe go on and get a win. This was a great college soccer game between two teams that played hard but respectful. It would have been great to get something out of the game, but we'll be better for it, for sure."
