SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball traveled to Baggett Field to take on Cal Poly on Tuesday, both in a continuation of the suspended March 12th game and a regularly scheduled non-conference matchup. The Waves fell in the suspended game 13-7, and defeated the Mustangs 6-5 in 11 innings.
The Waves (21-21) got stellar pitching in the second game from freshman starter
Jack Baird, but the Mustangs (23-23) came back from down four in the ninth to send the game into extra innings before the Waves won the game on a go-ahead hit-by-pitch.
BIG WAVES
- Sophomore infielder Brandt Belk (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) went 3-for-5 on the day, including an RBI single in the continuation of the earlier game.
- Freshman RHP Jack Baird (Parker, Colo./Legends HS) started the first game of his collegiate career, getting a no decision and striking out five.
- Freshman catcher Charlie Welch went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a double.
- Redshirt sophomore RHP Trevor Franklin (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) came in the game in the two extra innings and held off the Mustangs from winning the game, picking up his first win of the year.
GAME RECAP
In the completion of the suspended game from March 12, the Mustangs scored twice in the top of the ninth to push the lead to 13-6 before Belk had an RBI single in the bottom half. The Waves could not get any more across, and fell 13-7 to Cal Poly.
In the opening frame of the regularly scheduled game, Belk reached on a two-out error and was driven in by a Kanfer double to the left center wall, giving the Waves a 1-0 lead through one inning of play.
The Waves got two runs in the sixth. The first came when
Mike Malinchak reached on an error and
Charlie Welch scored from third.
Quincy McAfee then hit a sacrifice fly to score
Duncan McKinnon from third and give the Waves a 3-0 lead through six innings.
Starting pitcher
Jack Baird was great in his first collegiate start. The freshman from Parker, Colo. Scattered just three hits in five scoreless innings. He also struck out five batters.
In the ninth, the Waves loaded the bases with just one out, and a sacrifice fly from
Cory Wills, along with an RBI single from Welch gave the Waves a 5-1 lead going to the bottom of the ninth.
The Mustangs tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a three-run home run from Tate Samuelsson, sending the game in to extra innings.
In the 11th, the Waves got the bases loaded, and
Aharon Modlin got hit by a pitch to bring in Kanfer for the go-ahead run.

The Waves continue West Coast Conference play this weekend, traveling to Portland for the final away conference series. First pitch for the Friday game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
