PORTLAND, Ore. –
Jonathan Pendergast of the Pepperdine baseball team struck out 10 batters over eight innings in Friday night's 4-3 game one win over West Coast Conference opponent Portland.
The Waves (22-21, 12-10 WCC) were outhit by the Pilots (23-24, 5-17 WCC) 11-8 but a few errors from the Pilots resulted in the Waves being able to take the victory.
BIG WAVES
- Senior RHP Jonathan Pendergast (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) struck out 10 over eight innings. This was the third time this year that he went at least eight innings and struck out 10.
- Junior catcher Joe Caparis (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) continued his stellar year going 2-for-4 on the night with an RBI single.
- Redshirt junior utility Duncan McKinnon (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS) went 2-for-4 with an RBI double.
GAME RECAP
The Pilots scored first in the bottom half of the opening frame on a wild pitch. They took a 1-0 lead into the second inning.
Pepperdine answered in the top of the second, first on a double down the left field line from McKinnon, scoring
Matthew Kanfer and tying the game at one. The Waves took the lead on an RBI single from Caparis to take a 2-1 lead into the home half of the second.
A throwing error in the third allowed
Brandt Belk to score from third, giving the Waves a 3-1 lead after three innings of play.
In the fifth inning, Portland tied the game on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly. Going into the sixth inning, the game was tied at three runs apiece.
After a leadoff walk to open the seventh, Caparis put runners on first and second with a single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt then put runners on second and third before Belk was intentionally walked to load the bases. Kanfer then walked, allowing the eventual winning run to cross the plate and give the Waves the 4-3 lead.
Christian Stoutland took over the mound for Pendergast in the bottom of the ninth, and threw a perfect inning to pick up his fourth save of the year.
