Waves Explode For 10 Runs in Win Over Santa Clara

MALIBU, Calif. – After falling in game one of the series, the Pepperdine baseball team exploded for 10 runs on Saturday to defeat Santa Clara 10-1. Reese Alexiades had three RBI for the Waves.
 
The Waves (15-11, 6-5 WCC) had four players with more than one RBI while holding the Broncos (6-22, 1-7 WCC) to just a single run.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Sophomore outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) went 2-for-4 on the day, with 3 RBI including a 2-RBI double to start the scoring.
  • Junior LHP Easton Lucas (Simi Valley, Calif./Grace Brethren HS) dazzled, giving up just a single run on six hits and fanning seven batters in his third win of the year.
  • Junior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI on a double off the wall.
  • Senior outfielder Cory Wills (Henderson, Nev./Yavapai College) went 2-for-3 on the day, and drove in two.  
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Santa Clara struck first in the second inning, getting their only run of the game on an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead after one and a half.
 
The Waves answered back in the home half of the second inning, scoring two runs on an Alexiades RBI double down the line, bringing in Wills and Aharon Modlin to take a 2-1 lead. They added a run when Joe Caparis singled up the middle, scoring Alexiades from second. After two full innings, the Waves had a 3-1 lead.
 
In the third inning, Wills got his first RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly that scored Matthew Kanfer from third. Lutes then doubled off the wall, bringing in Duncan McKinnon, who pinch ran for Billy Cook, and Alexiades, who walked. On the next pitch, Caparis got his second RBI of the game on another single up the middle. The Waves led 7-1 after three innings of play.
 
Pepperdine scored twice more in the fourth, first on a Will single, which scored Brandt Belk. Alexiades then got his third RBI of the day, on a single through the right side, scoring Modlin to make the score 9-1 in favor of the Waves through four innings.
 
McKinnon brought in the game's final run in the fifth, when he singled into right field, scoring Caparis to cement the 10-1 Waves win.
 
 
UP NEXT
The teams will face off in the rubber match tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
