MALIBU, Calif. –
Christian Stoutland of the Pepperdine baseball team struck out a career-high 12 batters in Friday's 5-2 loss to Santa Clara.
The Waves (14-11, 5-5 WCC) started off hot, getting a home run from
Brandt Belk in his first game back after injury, but the Broncos (6-21, 1-6 WCC) overtook the Waves to take the series opener.
BIG WAVES
- Junior infielder Brandt Belk (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) had the Waves' only RBI on the day, a solo home run in the first inning. He went 2-for-4 in the game.
- Senior RHP Christian Stoutland (Calabasas, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) had a career-high 12 strikeouts in the game, four better than his previous career-best. He threw a complete game, giving up five runs on six hits.
- Freshman infielder Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) had a 2-for-4 day of his own, scoring the Waves' other run on a wild pitch.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves got off to a good start in the first, as Young singled up the middle to start the game. After he stole second and was moved to third on a groundout, Young scored on a wild pitch, giving the Waves a 1-0 lead. On the very next pitch, Belk smacked a ball off the scoreboard in right field for his first home run of the year. After one inning of play, the Waves led 2-0.
The Broncos got their first run in the third inning on an RBI groundout, cutting Pepperdine's lead to one. The Waves led 2-1 after three innings.
In the fifth inning, Santa Clara scored the tying run on a safety squeeze, to tie the game at two after five.
Santa Clara scored twice more in the seventh on back-to-back hits, taking a 4-2 lead. They then scored their final run of the game in the eighth, on a leadoff home run, cementing their 5-2 victory.

Game two of the series with the Broncos will be Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for three p.m.
