Waves Honor 1979 CWS Team in Finale Against LMU

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team welcomed back members of the 1979 team, the first to make a College World Series, to Sunday's 5-1 loss to Loyola Marymount.
 
The Waves (19-17, 10-8 WCC) tried to mount a comeback in the ninth, but the Lions (25-18, 13-8 WCC) kept the Waves to just a single run.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Senior outfielder Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Rey, Calif./L.A.C.E.S) went 3-for-4 on the day, hitting three singles.
  • Junior catcher Joe Caparis (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./ Palso Verdes HS) went 2-for-4 on the day, including an RBI double in the ninth inning to bring in the only run of the day for the Waves.
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Lions got the scoring started in the fifth inning, when they scored two runs on an error to take a 2-0 lead after five innings of play.
 
Loyola Marymount scored twice more in the seventh, first on a sacrifice fly and then on an RBI-single to take a 4-0 lead after seven innings. The Lions scored again in the eighth on a single up the middle. After eight innings of play, LMU led 5-0.
 
The Waves got their only run in the ninth, when Caparis doubled down the line to bring in Aharon Modlin from second.  
 
UP NEXT
The Waves play host to the top-ranked UCLA Bruins on Tuesday in the last home non-conference game of the year. First Pitch is scheduled for 3 PM.
