Men's Golf Vaults Back Into WCC Contention

STOCKTON, California – With the help of Joshua McCarthy's 6-under 66 that has given him the individual lead at the West Coast Conference Championships, the Pepperdine men's golf team vaulted back into contention by moving from seventh place to second after Friday's second round.

The Waves entered the day 15 shots back of San Francisco. Thanks to a 10-under 278 – eight strokes better than anyone else today – they moved past five other teams on the leaderboard and are now just two shots back of the Dons. Pepperdine has a two-day total of 567 (289-278) at the par-72 Reserve at Spanos Park.

Pepperdine's 10-under tied its fourth-best round ever at the WCC Championships. The defending champs will try for their 20th WCC title on Saturday.

- Junior Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) will head into the final round with a two-shot lead in the individual race. He's got an 8-under 136 (70-66). The 6-under matched his season best and tied for fifth for Pepperdine's best ever at the WCC Championships. He had an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole when he chipped in from a bunker, and he had six birdies.
- Sophomore RJ Manke (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Preparatory School) is tied for fifth place with a 3-under 141 (69-72). He had three birdies during his even-par round.
- Freshman Joe Highsmith (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) is tied for 12th with an even-par 144 (73-71). He had three birdies as he shot 1-under.
- Junior Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) is tied for 20th at 146 (77-69). His 3-under today included four birdies, three of which came on the back nine.
- Senior Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) was utilized as a substitute after not playing in the first round. He provided an even-par 72 with three birdies, two of which came on 16 and 18 to get him back to par.
