MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine men's tennis team went down to the wire to defeat No. 38 BYU 4-3 with the heroics of freshman Enrique Luque Rico who won court four in an extra set to snatch the match for the Waves.

The three-hour-and-thirty-minute nail-biter featured eight tie-breakers and two courts went into extra sets. The win marks the 17th over BYU overall, putting Pepperdine at an even 10-10 and 4-2 in West Coast Conference play.

The Waves took to doubles first, where the tandem of Adrian Oetzbach and Tim Zeitvogel took court one into a tie-breaker. The pair defeated 43rd-ranked Sean Hill and Jeffery Hsu 7-5 in a thriller but BYU ultimately garnered the doubles point.

In singles, Matias Sborowitz won in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 over Sam Tullis, finishing first and evening the overall score to 1-1. Soon after, Zeitvogel took court five by storm, defeating Ben Gajardo 6-2, 7-5.

The Cougars took two courts to put BYU ahead of Pepperdine 3-2, but the Waves kept rolling. On court two, Corrado Summaria needed an extra set to overtake Hsu after being defeated 6-2 in the first set. Summaria came back with a vengeance in the second and third sets, though, going 7-6 and 6-1 to round out his win, putting the Waves back even with the Cougars.

All the pressure was put on Enrique Luque Rico on court four, where he stood last. He took a calm 5-7 loss in his first set to Mateo Melendez, but shook off the loss and stormed back, going 6-3, 6-1 to take his court and win the match for the Waves at 4-3 overall.

Pepperdine continues the last homestand of the season on Sunday at 1 p.m., taking on the #28 San Diego Toreros in Malibu. The match will also stand as Senior Day for Matias Sborowitz and Scotland Garapedian as a presentation will follow the doubles portion of competition.
