MALIBU, Calif. –
Cooper Chandler of the Pepperdine baseball team threw a 5-hit shutout in the Waves' 1-0 victory over UC Davis at Eddy D. Field Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The Waves (4-6) snapped a six-game losing skid with the win on Friday, fueled by timely hitting and good defense, keeping the Aggies (6-6) to just five hits.
BIG WAVES
- Sophomore RHP Cooper Chandler (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland HS) had an absolute gem of a day, throwing a five-hit shutout, striking out seven Aggies without allowing a walk. The win was his first decision of the year.
- Senior outfielder Cory Wills (Henderson, Nev./Yavapai College) had the lone RBI on the day, an RBI single in the fourth inning.
- Freshman infielder Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) was the only Wave with multiple hits, as he went 2-for-4 on the day.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
A true pitcher's duel unfolded in Malibu on Friday, as Chandler faced the minimum through six innings. He gave up only two hits those first six, getting a double play in the first and picking a runner off I the sixth to face the minimum.
The Waves broke through in the fourth inning, when
Matthew Kanfer got on after a bunt single with one out. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored when Wills singled through the left side. The Waves almost got another run on a
Duncan McKinnon single, but the ball hit off the pitcher and forced Wills to stop at third base. After four, the Waves had the 1-0 lead that would stick.
Pepperdine did threaten numerous times, as the Waves put runners on the corners in the fifth and sixth innings, as well as putting runners on first and second in the seventh, but could not get another run, with Chandler needing just the single run to take the victory.
HIGHLIGHTS
NOTABLES
- Chandler's shutout is the second complete-game shutout the Waves have had in the past two years, as Jonathan Pendergast had a two-hit shutout against San Diego last year.
