MALIBU, Calif. – Yasmine Robinson-Bacote of the Pepperdine women's basketball team has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. This is the first time a Wave has won the award since 2003 when Tamara McDonald took home the honor, and is the third Wave overall to win.
Along with being named the Player of the Year, Robinson-Bacote earned her third-straight All-WCC first team recognition, the first Wave to be named to the first team three years in a row since Damaris Hinojosa earned first team from 2000-02.
The WCC also named
Barbara Sitanggan an All-WCC honorable mention and
Malia Bambrick to the WCC All-Freshman team.
Robinson-Bacote had an outstanding year, especially in conference play. The senior from Hillside, N.J. scored 20.4 points per game in WCC games, a full two points better than the next closest. She was also sixth in the conference in rebounding, bringing down 7.6 boards per contest. On the year as a whole, Robinson-Bacote is tied for 23rd in the nation, scoring 20.0 points per game across all contests. She became just the fourth player in Pepperdine history to score at least 1,600 points, and will finish her career fourth all-time in scoring. She will also finish fourth all time in scoring average, with 14.7 points per game up to this point.
Sitanggan takes home All-WCC honorable mention, the first WCC postseason award of her career. The junior from Fullerton, Calif. led the conference in assists, with 5.2 a game, as well as assist/turnover ratio, dishing out 3.7 assists per turnover. She scored 11.2 points per game, good for 20th in the conference, and was second in the conference in free throw percentage, making 87% of her foul shots.
Bambrick scored 8.1 points per game in conference play, good for fourth on the team, en route to earning a spot on the WCC All-Freshman team. The newcomer from Santa Clarita, Calif. was thrust into a starting role from the beginning of the season, and did not back down from the challenge. In conference play, she had seven games in which she scored in double digits, and had a season-high 25 points against Santa Clara.
The Waves finished in a tie for third place in the WCC Standings, and earned the third seed in the WCC Tournament. The tournament will again be played at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. from March 7-12. Pepperdine plays their first game on Saturday, with tip-off set for 3 p.m.
