Waves' Comeback Falls Short
3/4/2019 5:45:00 PM | Baseball
MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but could not complete the comeback against UC Santa Barbara in a rare Monday game at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Â
The Waves (3-6) had a towering home run from Billy Cook, but back-to-back home runs in the top of the ninth for the Gauchos (8-2) proved to be too much for the Waves. Â
Â
BIG WAVES
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Gauchos struck first, on an RBI groundout in the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead through four. The one run was starting pitcher Jonathan Pendergast's (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) one of just two given up in the game. His final line was 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 K, 1 BB.
Â
The Waves answered back in the fifth as Cook hit a towering fly ball over the netting in left field, evening the score at one.
Â
No runs were scored until the seventh, when the Gauchos got an RBI single to retake the lead 2-1 after seven innings.
Â
UC Santa Barbara hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the ninth, as well as another RBI single to take a 5-1 lead after eight and a half innings.
Â
In the home half of the ninth, Young got things started with a sharp single to left-center. After stealing second base, he scored on a McAfee double down the left-field line, cutting the Gaucho lead to just three runs. After McAfee advanced to third on a wild pitch, Matthew Kanfer hit a fly ball deep enough to score McAfee from third to cut the UC Santa Barbara lead to just two runs. A line out to second base ended the threat, with the Waves coming up two runs short in the comeback.
