Baseball Takes First Game in Stockton

STOCKTON, Calif. – For the second West Coast Conference series in a row, the Pepperdine baseball team won the first game of the series, as the team defeated Pacific 7-3 on Friday night. Â

The Waves (14-8, 5-2 WCC) were outhit by the Tigers (13-13, 1-6 WCC), but three costly errors by the home team led to two of the Waves runs.

GAME RECAP
The Waves jumped out to an early lead after back-to-back singles led to a 2-RBI double from Cook, giving the Waves a 2-0 lead after the first inning of play.

In the third, McAfee scored on an error by the shortstop, allowing Reese Alexiades to reach base. After three innings of play, the Waves led 3-0.

The Tigers got their first run in the third on a sacrifice fly, cutting the Waves lead to 3-1 after three. They got an RBI single in the fifth inning moving the score to 3-2, and another RBI single in the sixth, to tie the game at 3 after six innings.

Pepperdine retook the lead in the seventh on an RBI triple from McAfee, scoring Dickson and giving the Waves a 4-3 lead after seven.

In the eighth inning, Cory Wills hit a single up the middle to score Aharon Modlin from third, and Dickson singled to right to score Mike Malinchak, giving the Waves a 6-3 lead. Dickson then scored the final run of the game on a passed ball, pushing the score to the final 7-3 score.

The Waves and Tigers face off once again tomorrow for game two of the series, with first pitch at 5 p.m. Â

- Sophomore infielder Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) went 2-for-4 on the day, with two RBI on a double in the first inning.
- Junior infielder Quincy McAfee (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) went 2-for-5 on the evening, scoring twice and driving a run in.
- Freshman catcher Mitchell Dickson (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus HS) had the first RBI of his collegiate career.
- Sophomore RHP Cooper Chandler (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland HS) picked up his third win of the year, throwing 6 innings and giving up 3 runs.
