MALIBU, Calif. –The Pepperdine baseball team got a home run from
Matthew Kanfer, but Gonzaga scored twice in the ninth to defeat the Waves 3-1 at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves (12-8, 4-2 WCC) took a 2-1 lead into the ninth but the Bulldogs (9-11, 3-3 WCC) but a comeback in the last inning fell short, giving the Bulldogs the victory.
BIG WAVES
- Junior outfielder Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Rey, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) had the best day offensively for the Waves, going 2-for-4 including the solo home run in the first inning.
- Junior infielder Duncan McKinnon (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS) had the Waves' other RBI on the day, a sacrifice fly in the second.
- Senior RHP Jonathan Pendergast (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) threw seven innings, allowing just a single unearned run, striking out a single Bulldog, and giving up five hits.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves got off to a hot start, as Kanfer came up in the top of the first with two outs. He hit a towering fly ball to left field, hitting off the netting for a home run and a 1-0 Waves lead.
In the second inning,
Aharon Modlin led off with a single, which was followed by another single from
Reese Alexiades, putting runners on first and second. After a sacrifice bunt from
Mike Malinchak, McKinnon hit a fly ball to center, scoring Modlin from third. After two innings, the Waves led 2-0.
Two errors in the top of the sixth led to a Gonzaga run, cutting the Waves lead to 2-1 after six innings of play.
In the ninth inning, Gonzaga got a leadoff single, followed by a bunt single to put runners on first and second. After a sacrifice bunt, a runner was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. A ground ball was hit to
Trevor Kniskern, who came in for Pendergast at the beginning of the eighth, and he got the lead runner at home to keep the bases loaded with two outs. Troy Johnston then hit a ball into left field, scoring two runs and giving Gonzaga a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Billy Cook walked, and then was thrown out trying to steal second base. A ground ball ended the game, giving Gonzaga the 3-2 win.

The Waves are on the road for the next four games. They take on Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday, with first pitch at 6 p.m. They then head to Stockton to take on Pacific in a 3-game set, beginning on Friday.
