Waves Take First WCC Series from San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Wyatt Young of the Pepperdine baseball team had himself a day on Sunday, driving in five runs in the 10-5 win and helping the Waves to their first West Coast Conference series win.

The Waves (8-7, 2-1 WCC) scored all ten of their runs in a four-inning stretch to take the rubber match against the Toreros (14-6, 1-2 WCC).

GAME RECAP
The Toreros got on the board first on Sunday, as Shane McGuire hit a three-run shot in the first inning to give the Toreros a 3-0 lead after one complete.

Pepperdine answered back in the second, as Cook took a ball to the opposite field for a home run, cutting the Torero lead to 3-1 after two.

The Waves' bats came alive in the third inning, first when Young had his first RBI of the day, a double that scored Mitchell Dickson from first. After a Cook walk, Aharon Modlin hit an infield single, and Quincy McAfee scored on a throwing error. Alexiades then doubled to deep center field, scoring McAfee, Modlin and Cook, giving the Waves a 6-3 lead after three innings.

To lead off the Waves' fourth inning, Cory Wills doubled to right-center and Dickson was hit by a pitch. Young then stepped up and blasted a ball to right field for his first collegiate home run, giving the Waves a 9-3 lead after four innings.

Young got his fifth RBI of the game in the top of the fifth, when he singled in Cook with the bases loaded to give the Waves a 10-3 lead.

The Toreros got two runs in the bottom of the fifth, to cut the lead to 10-5, but Stoutland came into the game in the seventh, and shut the Torero offense down, securing the series win for the Waves.

The Waves host Minnesota on Tuesday in a non-conference game at Eddy D. Field Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.

- Freshman infielder Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) had the best day of his young collegiate career to this point, going 4-for-5 including a three-run home run and five total RBI.
- Sophomore infielder Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) went 2-for-4 on the day, driving in a run on a solo shot and scoring three times himself.
- Â Junior outfielder Reese Alexiades (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) also went 2-for-4, driving in three runs.
- Senior RHP Christian Stoutland (Calabasas, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) tossed three innings of perfect relief, striking out two batters.
