Waves Fall in Game One at San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team got on the board first at Fowler Park on Friday evening, but ultimately fell to rival San Diego 5-1.

The Waves (6-7, 0-1 WCC) worked the Toreros' (14-4,1-0 WCC) starter for 39 pitches in the first inning, but could not hang on for the win.

GAME RECAP
The Waves got off to a great start, scoring their only run of the game in the first inning on a Cook double to score McAfee, who walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. They worked the Toreros' starter Chris Murphy for 39 pitches in the inning, but only got the one run across, taking a 1-0 lead after the first.

The two teams were pretty much equal until the fourth inning when San Diego broke through for two runs. They then scored two more in the fifth, taking a 4-1 lead.

San Diego got their final run in the seventh inning on a solo home run from Cody Jefferis, solidifying a 5-1 victory.

The Waves and Toreros face off in game two of the series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 pm.

- Junior infielder Quincy McAfee (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) continued his stellar year, going 2-for-3 in the game with two singles and two walks. He leads the Waves with a .429 batting average and a 1.129 OPS.
- Sophomore infielder Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) had the Waves' only RBI, on a double down the left field line in the first inning.
